Antidepressants May Spur Brain Cell Growth

Tue Dec 27,11:47 PM ET

TUESDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitors (SSRIs), a widely used class of antidepressant drugs that
include Celexa, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft, boost nerve fiber growth in
key parts of the brain, according to a study with rats.

The finding may help explain how SSRIs work and why it takes a few weeks
before some antidepressants begin to have an effect.

The research team from Johns Hopkins university found that SSRIs
increased the density of nerve impulse-carrying axons in the frontal and
parietal lobes of the neocortex and part of the limbic brain that
controls smell, emotions, motivations, and organs that work reflexively,
such as the heart, stomach and intestines.

"It appears that SSRI antidepressants rewire areas of the brain that are
important for thinking and feeling, as well as operating the autonomic
nervous system," study leader and neuropathologist Dr. Vassilis E.
Koliatsos said in a prepared statement.

It has long been thought that antidepressants work by increasing
synaptic concentrations of the brain chemicals serotonin and
norepinephrine, enhancing or stimulating their transference.

"But our findings -- that serotonin reuptake modulators increase the
density of nerve synapses, especially in the front part of the brain --
may offer a better explanation of why antidepressants are effective and
why they take time to work," Koliatsos said.

The study appears in the January issue of the Journal of Neurochemistry.

So does cannabis, apparently.

Does that mean I should stick with my current SSRI/BC-Bud regimen for life?
:-)

Hmmm. Interesting. I DID feel less affected by the damn MS when I was
on Prozac, but I thought that was because I felt better mentally.

You don't suppose this nerve fiber growth happened in all parts of my
brain? I wonder how much of the rats' brains they looked at. . .

I started prozac about 6 weeks ago, after about a years hiatus from it.
This week I've been smiling, I'm suddenly a bit randy, I have music
playing in my thoughts, and it is cheerful and healthy music, which is
alot like a movies' soundtrack, just snippets of appropriate songs...
It's weird to think happily, but I think I'll give it a chance...
I thought it was a crutch, but, it's made everything better.

That's great! That's what those drugs are supposed to do; make you
feel a little better, take the dark clouds away.

I'm only off Prozac because I can't afford the stuff. . .which pisses
me off, don't get me started!

And a pox on stupid movie stars in wacko, made-up religions who come
out against these drugs!

Who the hell would ever listen to a movie star for medical advice,
anyway?

And that religion he's in is a real joke; a science fiction writer said
he was going to form a new religion, and damned if he didn't. Look for
this under the file of "why people believe weird things. . ."
