if people cant say merry christmas,, then no one should say happy chanuka,
glorious kwanza, joyfull ramadan etc etc,,,

if there is no christmas tree,, then call that toy -a holiday spinning clay
top.
- and then a holiday 8 candle holder.

kwanza??? not anymore,, its the cellebration of tarzans birthday,,,

ramadan??? never again,, its happy oil refinery day

i am sick of OUR traditions behind shoved under the rug,, due to #ucked up
political bullshit,,,

whats next,, Santa claus is gay too???? and wants to MARRY the Head Elf,,,

if people dont like Christmas,, then they should make sure they go to WORK
on the 25th of december.

it aint no Holiday tree,, its a Christmas tree.

I so agree with you, no decorations in government or federal buildings,
doctors, dentists none either, at least not where I have to go. no music
anymore in malls and store parking lots like they used to. cannot say merry
Christmas. I embrace all religions and realize we all have own our beliefs
either by birth or choice. nothing wrong with that at all. but why has it
just become a mockery of spend-spend, their is nothing left of the reality
of what it was years ago.

no salvation army bell-ringers are allowed outside many stores (that was
annoying) but still it was a tradition. and the ones I have seen say they
cannot dress as Santa anymore. it could offend. some talk now of not letting
kids sit on Santa's lap, may be accused of molestation, I think France has
put this into action, not sure what other countries I heard of.

maybe we should just all say bah-humbug and forget the whole thing. just
another "hallmark" holiday.

Can't even be a Holiday Tree. The word holiday is a variation on "Holy
Day," a day set apart to honor and worship one's god, gods, ancestors,
the local tree spirits, whatever.

The expression: Happy Holidays!" has very strong religious connotations
and origins and should not be used because non-believers of whatever
variety _might_ be offended by the very concept of a "Holy Day."

Guess we're just going to have to get used to having no holidays. Of
course, I'd rather push for recognition of _all_ "holy days" and get
more paid days off work.

Let's demand recognition of _everybody's_ "holy days" and paid days off
work (or time-and-a-half) for them all!

But then atheists and agnostics might be offended.

Oh, well, guess it's going to be none. Happy Continuous Workdays For The
Rest of Your Life, everyone! Saturdays, Sundays, and the other five are
just ordinary days now. No more days off, no more celebrations, no more
days of rest -- ever.

We're going to not offend ourselves out of every excuse ofr rest or
celebration.

Won't it be wonderful?

bobby, it is not! the evergreen tree is an ancient Roman tradition,
celebration of the Feast of Saturnalia, it's a solstice symbol.. back
in the late 19th - early 20th century, there were groups of Christians
who protested having a "Christmas" tree, on the grounds that it was a
pagan custom, and thus displeasing to God.

i'll be celebrating the day of Sol Invictus, the Conquering Sun, on the
25th. ;->

Merry Christmas, and Blessed Solstice! :->

rose
Happy Hanukkah too, Abundant Kwanzaa, and the best Pancha Ganapati
ever!
Ramadan doesn't really fall in to the 'winter celerations,' because4
it's not *supposed* to be a happy occasion, so....solemn Ramadan, I
guess? feast, fast, repast -- i'd LOVE to celebrate with everyone,
because celebration is one of my many middle names, hee hee! :->

The Arabic calendar (ergo Ramadan) is based on a lunar year, so even though
it was during this time a couple of years ago, this year it was around
thanks giving.
The Persians (were sun worshipers) and we do celebrate Dec 21st as winter
solstice. Its just a feast and it does not have any religious meaning.

Bobby;

>i am sick of OUR traditions behind >shoved under the rug,, due to #ucked >up political bullshit,,,

So am I!

And for the "take Christmas back" crowd, I say Ok, fine. But have
Christmas in the month and time of year it really occured: March. FYI,
the shepards were out in the field watching their sheep because it was
lambing season, springtime.

When they became Christians, the Romans changed Saturnalia, a pagan
holiday for the god, Saturn, into the celebration of the birth of
Jesus. I guess they needed a holiday to break up the winter months.

If people want to XXXXX about something, XXXXX about the complete
comercialization of Christmas that obscures the meaning of the day.

And it IS and has been the "holidays" since forever. Christmas Eve,
Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day. . .holidays, get it?
"Holiday" is what "holy day" has morphed into, so it's not getting rid
of anybody's religion.

Sheesh! Aren't there enough problems without people getting their
knickers in a knot over holidays?!?

Someone, I think Rose, said she wasn't wearing knickers, I believe. And Tick
isn't wearing a bra. So neither of them can tie knots.

Sorry, Sylvia, but I get so tired of who or what we call anyone or anything
these days. I still say Merry Christmas, whether it's "right" or not. So bring
out the mistletoe.

Merry Christmas, Sylvia and others. <getting down from soapbox>

Maybe they're candles, a puppy learning to poo-poo in the yard, or
spring flower pots. After all, you have to put 'em some place.

Merry Christmas.

This is a made up "problem." Stores use "Happy Holidays" so that
they can address as many people as possible ... it's a marketing
thing. They have "holiday" signs because it's more economical than
having signs for every holiday that falls at that time of the year.
It's a money thing.

If someone's holiday celebration is this wrapped up in marketing and
economics, they seem to have forgotten the meaning of Christmas ...
it's really not about what someone else says to you on the way into
WalMart. In fact, it's not about what someone else thinks or does,
either.

Dip me in honey and throw me to the lesbians, I thought Happy Holidays
was just a way of saying Merry Christmas and Happy New Year only
without wasting all that spit... I gotta watch more t.v....

Joyce

2005-12-21, 5:59 pm

I just think it's all crazy, I think my cards next year will just say
"bah-humbug" and celebrate as you wish. may your stockings be filled with
more than bah-humbugs, may you eat turkey or ham just because you want to,
and if you give gifts, it's just because we want to give to someone because
we love or like them. may you decorate a tree just because it looks pretty
and for no other reason, but don't have a live tree because that is ruining
the wilderness. and may you have a happy or miserable time on your day off
from work. most Americans get just that, one day !!! to bad that it falls on
a Sunday this year, doesn't matter you had your day off so bah-humbug. me, I
celebrate christmas but it's not the same as it used to be.

to me the REAL meaing of christmas, xmas, the holidays, the celebration,,,

is watching my kids in anticipation of the morning of the 25th,,, that is
what it is about,, in children it is purely a wonder to them,,, it is a
special time of the year,, and its about family,,

not toys,, not gifts,, not spending,, calculating what you got ,, its
value,,

but to me its about my kids,, and being with them,,, i dont need anything
right now,, cause i have them till boxing day,, and they remind me of what
xmas was about,,, long ago,,,

whether you have a god or dont,,, there is something you can get from this
day,,, that does not come from a store, and cant be bought,,,

i am having my kids,, their grandma,, aunts and uncles - all staying
overnight,, to spend the day together,,,,

that is my present,, and all i need or want,,, its the best gift i could
wish for,,,

so i bought a 25 pound butterball!!!! to celebrate what the day is to me,,,
family, being together,, giving ,sharing.

good on ya, bob! :-> i hope your day is filled with joy and laughter.
i agree very much with what you said....so many people drive themselves
into debt buying, buying, buying. having your kids with you to share
fun, a good meal, and games really IS the best present anyone could
have. i hope your time with the kids is all that AND a bag of chips (or
a drumstick)! :->
