Question about interferon treatment
|
|
|
| Hi Everyone,
Been having a rough time the past few weeks. Wanted to know if anyone else
taking Interferon has bad simptoms after the injection. I have began missing
some of my weekly injections because I feel bad enough as it is and my
weekly injection makes me feel worse. Usually last about 2 to 3 days, my
wife gives me the injection on Friday afternoon and it usually take me until
Monday afternoon before I begin to feel better. Hope it doesn't matter but
wondered what others think or know about it.
thanks,
Doc

| Hi Doc -
Early on in my Avonex therapy, I spent several days after the injection
suffering from numbness, chills, fever and the strangest feelings I have
ever experienced. Took my shot on Tuesday nights (used to be able to work
from home on Wednesdays), and did not feel "normal" until Friday. I took
two Aleve prior to injection, and often awakened in the middle of the night
and took two Tylenol to battle the muscle pains and headaches.
I found the best "medicine" (for me) was to add 20mg prednisone along with
the Aleve. I know, I know, people hate steroids, but it is the only thing I
have found to help me deal with the "flu-like" and other strange symptoms.
It cut the bad days down from three to one, eliminated most of the sweats,
chills, muscle aches and pains I experienced for months before adding
prednisone.
These days (four years later), I get up pretty much symptom free. I have
tapered down over the years to 10 mg pred (neuros advice), but do not think
I will every voluntarily quit until the neuro says absolutely, positively
"no more". I have weighed the positive against the negatives of the
medications and decided it is best for me at this time to have a better
quality of life and deal with the rest when (if) it happens. Perhaps pred
will help you over the "symptom hump", much quicker than it did for me.
Just remember that steroids have their own side effects and you need to
discuss the pros and cons with your health car professional.
Good luck, Debby

hi Doc,
that sounds like my entire experience with all the interferons! are you
new to injecting? if so, for *most* people, the bad side FX are said to
generally stop or diminish with time. it wasn't that way in my case,
but i've heard enough folks with M.S. say that their interferon side FX
*did* stop or get easier to handle once their systems got used to the
interferon injections.
if you've been injecting for a while, and the bad side FX are something
new, bring it to your neuro's attention and see what s/he has to
advise.
i do recommend generic Tylenol PM with an evening injection -- got
generic tylenol, plus antihistamine, and worked well for me actually
being *able* to sleep through some of the worst.
all the best,
rose

| I take avonex and still get the flu like symptoms if I forget to take
ibuprofen and/or tylenol. I make sure I start off with 2 and then take 1
every 4 hours or so. The next day sometimes I still have some aches so I
will take one when I get up.
Luckily the flu like symptoms seem to be under control. However, if I forget
to take something for them I pay dearly
