| I'm with these elec type shocks from my shoulder (right side) to my
toes and also into the rectum area. Does anyone have this? what do you
do? My Baclofen seems to cause these to get worse and they were a help
for so long. Thanks for any help!!!

| Hi Gloria.
I know what you mean about the shocks. I have periods of time (lasting
days or weeks) where touching a single nerve ending on my hand can
trigger a major shock which will run up my arm and into the armpit.
For a while it was on the edge of my hand, and any time I brushed it
against anything, especially fabric, I would get zapped big time. Even
shampooing my hair, the touch of my hair against my hand would shock
me. For a while, it moved to a spot on my thumb, then back to the
hand, but in a different spot.
There is a similar spot on my chest. If it is touched, I get a zap
which paralyzes my arm for a moment.
But I never associated it with Baclofen. But now that I think about
it, this is a symptom which I do not recall having prior to starting on
Baclofen for spasticity in my legs. And it does seem to have been more
pronounced when one of my neuros upped my dosage from 10-20 mg per day
to 90mg per day. That little experiment did not work for me, so I am
back down to 30mg per day, which seems to be enough to control my
spasticity for the most part. Hmmmm, I'll have to see how it goes in
the future.

| Hi Gloria,
My name is Jodi and my daughter, Tracey, has MS. She was dx'd at 20 and is
now 24. Not sure if you are new, or someone who has come back to asms, but
welcome either way!
Tracey has had shocks since a few months post dx's. At one point she would
get them in her head (brain?) that would take her right to the ground.
About the time she hit the ground it was gone. She hasn't had that one for
awhile, but she gets them all over her body on a daily basis and takes
neurontin for it.
tc,
jodi

hi Glo, the neuro and i used Tegretol for the shocks, and it helped,
tho i hated the side FX. anti-convulsants, with or without an
anti-depressant 'back' seem to be what most neuros prescribe for the
electric sensations.
maybe switching from Baclofen to a different muscle relaxer, ie
Zanaflex or whatever is covered/affordable, and seeing about Tegretol
(it's generic, and cost effective), or another covered anti-convulsant,
or AC/AD combo in a talk with your neuro?
all the best,
rose

| Jodi, I'm not new but I drop by here once in a while. I've had ms for
about 30 years & I am 61. These shocks are about to drive me nuts but I
have them on one side of my body only. This seems to cause weakness too.
But without insurance I no longer can afford Neuontin. It is very
expensive! I'm married but we do not have enough money for meds but too
much money to get help! I take no MS drugs! Except Baclofen. Thanks so
much for your response!!

| Rose, THANKS so much! I'm writing these names for the meds that you
speak of!!! I'll check prices. I find that since being BACKto the
W-chair, that elec. sensations are much worse. I have trouble sleeping
as it wkes me! MS is a bummer at times.

they have a generic for it now, i believe it is called gabapentin, so if it
worked for you before, it might be a little more affordable.

Glo, i used to get electric shocks waking me up at night too, and it
was the worst. for a while, the neuro had me on high-dose Tegretol,
where i took the pills 3X a day during the daytime, then another one
before bed, but we started stepping it down (the tegretol) after a
while, with me using less during the day. the one before bed i
continued with after i'd stopped the daytime doses altogether, because
i wanted to make sure those wake-up shocks didn't keep yanking me out
of sleep. i know that YOU know we all react differently, but in my case
it worked out very well. i still get zaps, burning, buzzing and tingles
every once in a while, but not all day alla de time, like it was for a
while there.
if you don't have insurance coverage, Zanaflex is expensive. my
anti-spas/anti-convulsant meds are Valium and Tegretol, and that's the
reason -- they've both been generic forever, and both are CHEAP
compared to other similar substances.
M.S. is definitely a bummer sometimes!!
best,
rose

need these pills until I get somethng better. I wanted to just wait
until my next appt with my neuro but it isn't until Jan. so my doc will
cal me after he gts back on Tues.
My shocks have become much worse jst recently.

| also, remember tegretol is availble as generic carbamazepine, a lot cheaper.
diazepam is also generic and cheap but docs are restricited in prescibing
it.

for sure! when i type 'tegretol,' i mean carbamazepine, but write
'tegretol' because i can never remember the name of the generic! same
with valium, my prescription is written for 'diazepam,' but a lot of
folks seem to get confused and think it's a drug they've never heard
of, so i just type 'valium.'
same thing with Tylenol -- i type 'generic tylenol,' because i can
never remember how to spell 'aceta...whatever it is!"
neurontin is also now available as a generic, gabapentin. and prozac is
generic, too, but i can't even remember the generic name for the stuff.
I ALWAYS go generic, if one's available. if one is not yet available, i
probaly can't afford it, so i ask the doc about what ELSE might work.
