| My sister is on the suspision list for MS. The nuerologist that she saw
said she fits all the concerns for MS except that the one MRI that was done
came out negative for lesions. Her primary care doctors did not feel he was
thorough enough and have scheduled an MRI of her spine and another
appointment with a seperate nuerologist. My ? is can you have MS without
lesions showing up? or can lesions that are really there be missed by and
MRI? thanks in advance

Her PCP is doing the right things. I am a little surprised he is
not also requesting gadolinium (sp?) enhancement (adds contrast
to the image). And, yes, you can have MS and the lesions not
showing up, especially if it is early in the disease course.

| I was diagnosed with no lesions showing up on my MRI. They based it on my
symptoms and ruled out any other illnesses.
I had an MRI several months later and 1 lesion popped up

| Jim, a competent MRI operator will add gadolinium on the basis of "ghost"
images that need enhancement to clear. I was in for MRA, which is an
angiogram done with a MR machine, when the operator switched to gadolinium
for enhancement of 10 or so "ghost" images and revealed 15 plaques later
confirmed as MS.
That was in '94, and ended some 20 years of being thought of as a
hypochondriac.

| I seem to be wrong as often as right lately, according to the wife and
grandkids, but nowadays as I understand it, enhancement is used to
determine 'active lesions'.
My original MRI didn't have it, my follow up MRI's 6 months later
included one of each as have all MRI's since.

hi, it is possible to have M.S. without lesions showing up, but what i
think the Primary doc is concerned about is, there are some folks with
M.S. who carry most of their lesion burden in the spine, rather the
brain. a thorough neurologist would probably have ordered a complete
spinal/brain MRI in the first place (unless ability to pay is an
issue).
there are quite a few folks on the newsgroup who have spinal cord
lesions, with no or just one or two lesions in the brain. the PCP
probably wants to see IF your sister falls into that category. it
sounds to me -- i'm not a doctor! -- as if the PCP is doing a good job.
best to you and your sister!
