Topical creams how long
|
|

| How long does topical creams such as Dovonex , Betamethasone and Tarzac,
take to be effective (in general) how long are they safe to take and
when does one give up on them. I know there are many if ands and buts.
Iam only talking in a very general way. Thanks

I'd say Dovonex should show you some progress within a day or two,
steroids like betamethasone should show partial effects within an
*hour* or two, both may take some weeks to reach full effect. If any.
Tarzac ... Tazorac? takes somewhat longer, may irritate the * out of
you and then suddenly improve. Me, I lost patience with it.
Dovonex seems safe at recommended doses indefinitely. OTOH, I suspect
there is much absorption, and after a couple of months, you can taper
off it without loss, for weeks or months. Use some neutral topical
instead. Steroids are best used on/off - three days on, one day off,
three weeks on, one week off, etc Tazorac, I dunno, but I think if
you do get clearing from it, you are generally advised to discontinue
it, use steroids or something or nothing instead.

The betamethasone should work quickly, but is only safe for a few weeks
at a time, using the most minimal amount possible. Dovonex takes 2-8
weeks, anecdotally, and is safe long term as long as you don't exceed
100gms in 10 days. Don't know about Tazorac; I had a horrible burning
reaction to it years ago. Be very cautious about the adrenal
suppression that always accompanies steroid use, topical, oral or
inhaled, after about two weeks or so.

Thanks for your responses. Are there other creams (prescription type)
That I have missed or are the above three the major types?. Again thanks.

There are anthralin and coal tar topicals.
Sometimes antibiotic and antifungals are thrown in for good luck.
Inspired by the long-time treatment of a trip to the Dead Sea, I take
a bath with about eight ounces of table salt thrown in.
There are the zinc topicals, same active ingredient as Head and
Shoulders, also selenium topicals.
Exorex uses coal tar and linolenic acid esters ("banana peel").
Phenol-based cleaning products may be useful, if they don't cause
cancer instead.
Everything from french dressing to duct tape has been tried by someone
and pronounced a success, but none seem to be very *widely* effective.
And that doesn't even count adding occlusion to whatever topical you
like, wrapping the area in saran wrap to increase penetration.
And that hasn't including moisterizing lotions, which can be very
helpful, tho unlikely to cure anything.
And, um, maybe some other stuff ...

Clobetasol - I used if for years, but it just calmed the infection and
did not stop the spread.
Thanks to this group, I learned of Enbrel. I was totally clear within
5 months and now, almost 3 years later, I am still clear.
