BioCryst enthused by trials of psoriasis drug
BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. reports successful results Phase I trials
of its psoriasis drug, BCX-4208, with 84 healthy volunteers.
Birmingham-based BioCryst (Nasdaq: BCRX) designs and develops drugs
that are intended to block key enzymes involved in cancer,
cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases and viral infections.
More than 7 million people in the United States suffer from psoriasis,
a chronic immune system disorder affecting the skin, and occasionally
the eyes, nails and joints.
Results from the Phase I study indicate single doses of BCX-4208 were
well-tolerated among participants when safety guidelines were strictly
enforced. BioCryst plans to begin its next trial of the drug involving
another 60 healthy volunteers in the second quarter of 2005.
"The results from our first trial are very encouraging, and we are
committed to the development of BCX-4208 for the treatment of psoriasis
and other T-cell-mediated conditions where an oral therapy offers clear
advantages and might greatly improve patient quality of life," Dr.
Charles E. Bugg, BioCryst's chairman and chief executive, said in a
written statement.
The clinical development program for BCX-4208 is being conducted under
an Investigational New Drug Application filed with the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration for treatment of psoriasis. In addition to
psoriasis, BioCryst intends to investigate the potential of BCX-4208
for the treatment of other autoimmune conditions that are believed to
involve T-cell activation like rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease
as well as organ transplant rejection.
Following successful completion of Phase I clinical trials, BioCryst
plans to initiate a Phase II study in psoriasis during the second half
of 2005.
