Hi all,
I recently found out that I have developed an
allergy/intolerance/migraine trigger to onions of all things,, for
many years I couldn't tolerate raw fresh onions but had no problems
with reconstituted dried onions or completly cooked ones. But now it
seems can't have any form without both being violently ill and coming
down with some of my worst headaches to date. So much for going out to
eat,, onions seem to be in almost every main dish. And I'll have to
learn how to cook all over,, minced dried onion has always been my
number 1 main seasoning.

At least at this time it's not quite as bad as Dad's cousin's case,,,
she has trouble breathing if she eats anything cooked on the same grill
that onions have been cooked on. I just get nasty migraines and
extremely sick and maybe knocked out cold for a day or two or three at
worst, but at least I can breath OK. The strange thing is that Dad's
cousin first started having problems with onions at around the age of
50, right where I am now.

Interesting Bear, but what a shame! I can't handle raw onions if they're
strong, in other words if they burn my eyes Mr. Migraine comes next. I've
never been one to eat raw onions and so far they don't seem to bother me if
they're cooked in something. I wonder Bear, could it be the *type* of onion
you're using?

It doesn't seem to matter any more, the last time it flared up was on a
batch of chili that had only the amount that was in the chili powder
plus about a tablespoon of minced dried onion that I tossed in with
the meat when I was browning it.This was in about 6 quarts of chili!

About the time the onions get about to the middle of the small
intestines at which time it's like dumping baking soda into vinegar,,
except that the gas produced is mostly hydrogen sulfide, and it expands
so fast that everything in the entire digestive system is instantly
pushed violently out both ends along with the very foul gas,, it almost
smells like burnt black powder smoke,, but worse.

Not something I care to have happen again!

Oh geesh, it's awful to be that sick Bear, don't blame ya for not wanting
anymore onions! Did you get hot/cold/dizzy? I was as violently sick as you
were the last 2 times I ate tomatoes...love 'em, but never again! Funny,
over the years the acid began to bother me and I'd reached the point of only
being able to eat the mild yellow ones. When I got sick the first time I
wasn't sure, know what I mean? Well the second time I was! I thought I was
going to pass out. I've never passed out in my entire life, but thought I
was close and hollered for Ramey, he stayed with me through it all, what a
guy, I'm sure I made that excorcist girl look tame! ;-)

Not so much hot or cold that I noticed, but just drenched with
perspiration, enough so that with the vomitting and the diarrhea I do
end up quite dehydrated, to the point that before I finally identified
the problem I have ended up in the hospital on IV fluids twice already.
I think it was the dehydration that was making me dizzy, I don't know
what chemical in the onions would cause the part of the reaction of
knocking me out for a day or 3 though. It seems strange as hell that
Demerol or morphine doesn't make me drowsy in the least (at least at
the dosages that I have been prescribed so far) yet onions can knock me
out cold.

On a more humorous note the first time I had the sulfurous belches that
smelled to all the world of burning gunpowder was one that woke me from
a sound sleep,, the last show I watched on TV that night before going
to bed was on Spontanious Human Combustion,,,

It sure sounds like you picked a winner for a mate too, I know Dawn
should be nominated for sainthood for all the times she's gone without
sleep staying with me while I've been too sick to think. At least Linda
Blair was just blasting from one end in the movie.

Bear, When I read the Buccholz book (Cure your headaches 1-2-3) he was
adament that onions be avoided at all costs: leeks and scallions are
ok. I actually emailed him, because I couldn't imagine cooking without
them, and he said they were among the top food triggers. So, now we buy
leeks. And, we seem beter...
My father, who always "got a headache if he skipped a meal", and
recently got an opthalmic migraine, has always become violently ill if
he eats onions--he's just called it an allergy.
Leeks aren't bad as an onion substitute.
