Congratulations, Ronnie. That's great. Sounds like a nice healthy baby.
May he live long and prosper.
Well, thanks for your note the other day. I'm getting used to the idea.
Have spent a few days imagining what it's going to be like to be a
grandmother. I suppose by the time the baby comes (due date is now
officially May 10... she saw a doctor yesterday), I'll have recovered from
the shock and be ready to sit in my rocking chair and take up knitting.
The kids are excited and I'm trying to be excited for them. Right now,
there are all sorts of insurance problems (as I knew there would be). When
they first told me... the first thing that popped out of my mouth was
"That's great.... so you ARE planning on getting married, right?" and the
second thing was "You better get some insurance FAST, before your pregnancy
is confirmed by a doctor." My son said yes, they had been talking about
marriage... and she got on the phone and said "Well, we were thinking about
February... but now we'll push it up. I want to be married when the baby
comes." Unfortunately, that is probably not going to happen. My son is
self employed and has an individual policy (which I insisted he get). She
just moved here (to FL from CA) and left her job there and has no insurance.
They have been doing research all week long. He cannot get a "group policy"
because his business doesn't have enough employees. Even if he marries her
and adds her to his policy, she would have to go thru a health screening,
and they would not accept her for maternity coverage. They have talked to
several insurance agents who all told them the same thing... you can get
health coverage, but not for maternity. A blood test will show you are
already pregnant, it will be a pre-existing condition.
So... instead... they went out and bought a policy for her, but it will NOT
cover maternity. For that, she has to be on Medicaid. I cringed when she
told me. My experience with Medicaid in Florida has not been wonderful.
Many doctors (and many therapists, including myself) will not join Medicaid
due to the amount of paperwork involved and the low reimbursement fees.
Which leaves not a whole lot of choice. Medicaid is being taken over by
HMO's... which means that finding an ob who accepts it will even be harder.
I imagine her standing in line in a clinic somewhere. She says a friend of
theirs had the same problem... was on Medicaid for maternity coverage and
had no problems with it. So who knows, maybe it will work out. But there's
a catch there, too. If she is on Medicaid, she cannot get married to my
son... because if she does, their income will be too high and she won't
qualify. Not sure what to advise them, or if there is a solution. But I
guess what will be will be. And a year from now, I'll be somebody's
grandmother. Oy.
Regards,
Arlene

| Arlene, Mazol Tov. It makes me nuts that we don't have universal
insurance in this country. I used to work for a staff model HMO that
went bankrupt because we DID allow preexisting conditions, so women
would join, have their babies, and switch out.
I did work for a Medicaid HMO, Neighborhood Health, and they are a
decent organization. If you are pregnant, or have dependent children
and meet income requirements, she should qualify. I also worked for
community health centers, and the care was good. I would advise her to
apply for medicaid, also go to the hospital where she plans to deliver
and work with the hospital social worker around free care/coverage. I
know you're a social worker, but this is coverage stuff.
In this country, we should cover everyone at a baseline level. It's a
travesty that we don't.
I'm waiting for grandkids--my daughter is engaged to a great man, but
they're just not ready. I am.

Judy, thanks for your input. Yes, I know a lot about mental health
disorders. No, I know NOTHING about insurance coverage (other than what I
deal with). I have a guitar friend who is a pediatrician and works at
Neighborhood Health in Miami (I think he told me that it had been bought out
by United... or combined forces with United... or something like that). I
am going to get in touch with him and see if he can offer any advice. She
has started applying for the Medicaid... since there really is no choice...
and hopefully we can find a good Ob or good facility where she can get good
care. The shame of it is... they really WANT to get married. And it's sad
the way the laws work. She can't get married because she can't afford to be
pregnant and not have care. My son is willing to pay for insurance for her,
but won't be able to get it. You'd think the idea of government assisted
programs would be to enable healthy mothers to have healthy babies.
Certainly, being in a committed family would be a healthy, positive thing
for any child. Anyway, nothing to be done about it. They'll deal with
it... and hopefully get married after the baby is born.
Wish I could feel as enthusiastic as you. I guess it just came as a shock.
I wasn't really thinking of being a grandmother yet... but then again, I
realize it's not my choice. Give me a few more weeks and I'll get used to
the idea. Soon you'll see me posting on here about all the neat new baby
things I went out and bought. I only am hoping, now, that it's a girl. Not
that I didn't love my little boys, but... all those years, I missed out on
buying cute little pink frilly things. It would be a nice change from
having lived in a house full of rollerblades and hockey sticks and footballs
and cub scout uniforms.
Regards,
Arlene

| Arlene,
I know, I say I want them to have kids, but I'm not ready to even
plan the wedding. My husband buys our insurance via his office: and our
rates just went up 24%--and I sure don't get 24% more money from Blue
Cross--he did have an option as an employer to select
family/couple/parent with kids/single. He has 5 employees--two need
insurance. There are events that qualify you to adjust insurance
outside of "open enrollment' and they include marriage, birth of a
child, loss of a job. In Rhode Island, insurance is overseen by the
department of business regulation. I called them this year, because my
former boss, the former CEO of Neighborhood is the head of the
department. They counseled us to buy it direct from Blue Cross and skip
the broker--no drop in rates, and I haven't seen the new cards yet--I'm
terrified we'll have a gap in coverage.
When I worked at the community health centers there was a definite
disincentive to marry: moms and dependent kids get medicaid coverage,
dads don't and can disqualify you.
When will we get universal coverage/single payor?
I can't wait for you to start to share photos...
