Been awhile hope everyone is doing ok, if not hope you are soon. I was at
the doctors today to find out why he had changed my prescriptions from 8 a
day Tylenol#3 to 6 a day. I didn't notice when I had picked up all my
prescription two weeks ago an other 6 different medications all for the
migraines. So when I got in to ask he tells me he has never prescribed me 8
a day. And got upset with me when I said that he did. Well I told him I
could bring in the last s months empty bottles to show him and or he could
phone the pharmacy, he did and they backed him up. Well this had happened
once before and he changed it back to 8 a day from the last mistake. And now
he is accusing me of lying to him now. He didn't want to see the empty
bottles because he was going home. But I took them to the pharmacy to see
what was up. And they indeed had on there computer that the 3 prescriptions
before were 8 a day. And I know I have been on 8 a day for the last 5 months
and he made the mistake before and corrected it, now he says It never happed
and that he has it written down and it's always been 6 a day. Well I hate
being accused of lying it has upset me now. But what can you do? I have an
appointment with my neurologist next month on 19th I sure hope something
gets fixed concerning this. I'm 50% better than I was two years ago but
still can't hold down a job and just want so bad to get over this and back
on with my life. This doctor also persciped me 1200mg of Gabapentin 3 times
a day the first time I been on it and I was just a zombie. And later changed
it to 300mg 3x a day. And I take Topamx 100mg twice a day and it really
makes it hard to communicate anything to the doctor because of it's affects
it has on me, it makes me dumb as a wood post is the best way to describe
it. But why would he do this when I have the bottles to prove it and the
pharmacy has it on the computer. Yet when the docter phoned them he said
they had no record of it. I'm not sure why I'm writing this I guess I'm just
trying to get the frustration out some where. Sorry about that you guys. May
there be much better days in your future to all

Hi Ray, well I can understand your frustration. Sometimes I find that my
pharmacy changes my prescriptions without even contacting the doctor. I had
it happe a few months ago and posted it on here. In fact, I knew what my
doctor prescribed, but the pharmacy kept screwing it up...in my favor. I
just let it go. Recently my mailorder pharmacy from my insurance screwed up
two of my prescriptions. The latest I got in the mail yesterday. I think
it's the screwiest darn thing and I'm almost ready to start making copies of
everything I get on paper.

Just today I went online to Walgreens to find out when my Midrin would be
done. They had two new refills on theree, but yet told me they had not been
able to reach my doctor...what is with that.

Anyway, I'm sorry you're struggling with this..even more sad that you can't
work. I'll be praying for you...as I do with all my other ASHM friends.

Codeine has a half-life in the body of 2.9 hours. That means your blood
concentration will oscillate wildly if you take T\ylenol #3 on an
every-4-hour or every-6-hour schedule. It's an ok drug if you just need an
occasional, short-term relief from pain, but not a good choice if you are
taking it for a more chronic pain. Taking half pills twice as often (for
the same total number per day) will usually work a lot better. Keep in
mind, it takes about 40 to 60 minutes to absorb a dose, so if you wait until
you are miserable to take a dose, you will continue to be miserable for
quite a while. If the pain really is chronic, you need to keeep ahead of
it.

I will do a no-no and attach a graphic to this. The pink curve shows the
quantity of codeine in the body if you take 30 mg every six hours. Note
that the trough is about 30% of the peak. That means one or both of two
problems is likely to occur: the peak concentration will be high enough
that you are sort of stupid and dopey and perhaps nauseated for a while,
whil the trough concentration will be so low that you are in pain. The blue
line is the concentration if you take a half tablet every three hours (still
four a day). Note that the blue concentration eventually stabilizes with
much less fluctuation, but takes about three doses to settle into the
optimal range. The yellow line starts with a whole pill, which brings you
quickly to an appropriate level, then continues with a half tablet every
three hours.

Well, phooey. I hought I was going to attach a figure, but I can't paste
it in. If any one is curious, I will e-mail the spread sheet. It allows
one to plug in values for codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone (about equal at
3.6 hours), and hydromorphone (worse even than codeine, at 2.5 hours).

Thank you for the prayers, much appreciated. Your idea of copying
everything is an excellent idea, I will be doing that from now on with
everything
that has to do with my chronic headaches and migraines. I need to
desperately keep better track of what treatments I've on and
medications anyway. I have to take back control of my life and try to get
this thing over with. I had my first bad Migraine at work in about 1999 I
think
it was. I was scared and with the first really weird aura happening at the
same time, the doctor from here sent me into the Health Science center in
Winnipeg 50 miles south of here because they thought it was a stroke. To
make a long stories short I went down hill from there and then the Triptan
drugs stopped working
for me and in Dec 2002 I was laid off work because I was missing so much
work, sometimes missing a week at a time. I tried working and didn't last
more than 3 months. I been on Family Services Disability now for must be
some what better than 2 years and I hate it. Hard to live on it. The last
year I have been able to function a lot better. Light duty chores and
driving and things on my good days. But I get knocked down with a 3 day
headache then I might be good for as much as a week and feel good enough to
work and every thing then I get another one of some kind, a never ending
cycle as it seems. I also have a chronic headache that gives me a sharp pain
like nail being driven in to the back of my head into the back of my eye
ball. And is excruciating like a 10 for a second or two then stops for a few
minutes or more than hits again. But I been on Tylenol#3 since about
January, it was six a day and it does help some what I have an easer time
trying to block it out of my mind. Well when I was getting all my
prescription filled from the regular doctor around March I had said to him
that sometimes I take as many as 8 a day. He had no problem with that and
wrote the prescription for 2- 4x aday. with 2 or 3 repeats like the rest of
my medications. So when there finished I go back to get them all them
filled. I notice a few days later that he changed it to 3 a day so I got an
appointment to see if it was a mistake he said yes and changed it back to 4
a day and 2 or 3 repeats. Now the next few months go by I go get them filled
again and I notice a week ago that it was 3 a day again so I went to him
yesterday to see if it was another mistake and that's when he tells me he
has never written one out for 4 a day and accuses me of lying to him about
it and gets mad at me. So today I did find 3 empty bottles with 4 a day
written on them and I am dropping them off at the doctors office for him to
see with a note that I didn't like being accused of lying. I'm (not) going
to talk to him or see him though. I just hope that the neurologist I see on
the 19th of next month can help me some how. I have only seen him once
before and I understood that the doctor here was following his
recommendations to get me fixed up. I can maybe try the triptans again or
botox or a pain clinic anything there has to be something to get me out of
this cycle. It just can't keep going on like this forever can it? I have
seen that there is like 100 medications that can be used for migraine and
95% of us migrainers can be cured if you find the right combination. I think
I have tried 35 or more now till I found this combination of 7 that got me
back up to about 50% better than I was. And I take magnesium, B2 and Qo 10
enzyme too. So there is many more combinations that I guess I can try. There
just has to be, there just has to be a way out of this. I don't think I can
last another year like this up and down all the time. I know I would never
do it but I have toyed with the idea of jumping off the water tower to end
it once and for all, but I have family to think about. Sorry for such a long
reply I'm just so wired for sound because of how the doctor talked to me. If
you click on it and see that it's to long you don't have to read it.
Anyway peace to all and a good night.

OK I'm sorry a bit confused, I was taking 2 or 60mg every aprox 5 hrs, a
total of 8 pills a day and nothing through the night. Now I have 6 pills a
day to use so if I take 1 every 3 hrs I would be better off, right? I get up
at 6am so one would be just before my regular bed time.

If you took nothing through the night, take two when you wake up, then one
every four hours or one-half every two hours. That should work out to 5.5
or six tablets a day. Methadone, OxyContin, MSContin, Avenza, or Kadian
would be abetter choice, but most are pretty pricey. Methadone is
inexpensive, but a slightly higher percentage of people find it too sedating
than for the others. I understand it has been frustrating, but keep
searching for other ways to deal with your headaches. The opiates are
necessary for some folks, but it's always better if you can find a less
toxic method for controlling them.

Hi (((((Ray))))), good to QQ you, so sorry you're having a rough time! I
don't know why your Dr would disagree with you when you have the pharmacy
records as proof, perhaps he's had some problems justifying some of his
scripts, *they* have been giving some of our Docs out there a pretty rough
time with *controlled* meds. Perhaps he's one of those *I'm never wrong
people*, LOL! Can't really second guess someone I don't know. It's a shame
that chronic pain patients go through what they do, just to survive
basically. I know that you know from reading this group that this sort of
thing happens all the time, it shouldn't, but it does. Hopefully your Neuro
will have more compassion. Vent away Ray, come on back and vent some more
if you need to!

Hugs,

~Sage

I did find out, well from personal experience, but I was talking to some
others yesterday and yes he is a "I'm never wrong person" And the pharmacy
phoned me and are very nice and confirmed by looking at the paper
prescription that yes I was right all along. They said he must of been
having a bad day. I have seen some stories of others and well horrific
compared to mine. I'm hoping the Nero is a different personality. Thanks and
take care.

Makes much more sense to me now that I think about it. Taking 2 every 4
hours like the directions say would leave me with a 12 hr time span with
nothing I guess. As for toxic I think Tylenol, to much of it worries me.
Even though a pharmacist has said to me that even at 8 a day was a safe
dose. He was more concerned about the amount of codeine. But at this point
seems I can't have one with out the other anyway. I was one that never took
anything for headaches or flue ect. seemed back then I just kept busy and it
would go away. Now I'm swallowing pills just to feel a bit pain free. And I
have talked to a 60 year old man not that long ago who has never had a
headache in his life. wow!!! Anyway thank you for your input. Greatly
appreciated.
Take care

Ray, doesn't the Tylenol 3 keep you awake if you take it at night? I can't
take any pain medication at night, the only thing I can take is Midrin.

Most of the time theres not to much of problem with going to sleep. I usally
fall asleep within a half hour. My last dose use to be around 9pm then I'm
usally in bed before midnight. But there are times if I go to bed to late,
I can't get to sleep all night.I can only sleep 6hrs and I stay to that
