Hi all - I've had migraines for almost 30 years now, but they've always
been single-day incidents. Currently, I take Maxalt or Zomig, and that
ends the episode.

Right now, I'm on day 5 of a doozy. Both prescriptions push the migraine
away for 5 or 6 hours, but it comes back just as strong. My doctor
prescribed me some Tylenol 3 to go along with the Maxalt and/or Zomig,
but it hasn't made any difference.

I'm 5 months since my last cup of coffee, and don't eat/drink anything
with caffeine, so I know that's not the cause. Nitrites are a big
trigger of mine, so I usually avoid them. My wife and I bought a
honey baked ham (containing sodium nitrite), which I ended up eating
most of - just finished it last week, perhaps a day or two before
the headache started.

Is it possible that the *lack* of sodium nitrite in my system is
what has triggered this migraine? I didn't have any problems while
I was eating the ham, only after it was all gone. The amount of ham
that I ate over the two week span might account for the length and
severity of this episode.

If it's not the ham, then I'm at a complete loss as to why I've got
this, and why it's gone on so long. I'll be going back to the doctor
on Monday if it hasn't subsided by then - but to be honest, I don't
know what else can be done, other than run some tests for something
"else".

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks from a long-time lurker,
Dave

Tylenol 3 never did anything for any pain I have had. I was prescribed
it after surgery and it only made me nauseous and dizzy and made no
difference to the pain level. I decided to not take it.

Are you affected by weather. Odours are my most common triggers but
weather is also a trigger. I always know when a storm is coming.

Howdy, Davey-Lurky!

I'm sorry you are in so much pain.....

When a food product triggers my pain increase(usually eaten for supper,) it
usually starts the next day and lasts for 3 days, with the first two being
severe. Certain brand hot dogs, au jus (sp?) from a prime rib at a specific
restaurant, processed ham in a can, sometimes fish sticks, tuna, and others
can do it. That pain is usually a "pound"er, which mine usually don't
pound. However, if i somehow end up ingesting some type of sugar
substitute, i get a 3-5 day one that is....well, linear and
piercing....often sets in my right eye or in the eyebrow.

You may want to ask your doctor if you may be a candidate for a pain shot.
This would be a rare circumstance and you'd only want to ask if you see no
end in sight for the pain, and the pain is debilitating.

I only say this because you've already made an appt. and have tried the
T3's....You sound like a responsible patient.

Please, let us know how your pain is going and what you've done about it....

Deep peace,
Lavon

My suggestion is that you get someone to drive you to your Dr and ask
him to give you a shot of Meperidine HCl mixed with some Phengan and a
steroid I can't remember the name of mixed together. That usually
will kill a multi-day one dead in it's tracks, but you need to have
the time to sleep it off.

See http://www.migraines.org/treatment/pronrcin.htm for more info.

Thanks for the kind thoughts - it's been a damn tough week. Yesterday was
the worst - in addition to the headache being the worst it's been all week,
I had to sit through a seven hour meeting (and even then, I left early!). Oh,
the agony! ;-)

I've still got it today, but right now it's subsided, as I've taken my
latest pain concoction - one Maxalt, two Advil, and two Excedrin. It'll
be back by mid-morning, I suspect, but that'll give me enough time to get
stuff done in the office and feel like I've been at least somewhat productive
for the day. Glad it's Friday, though!

I've never noticed a correlation with weather, but the one thing
that's heavy in Austin right now is the mountain cedar pollen. It
gives me itchy eyes and a runny nose, but I've never noticed it to
relate to migraine in any repeatable way.

TGIF, in any case. I'm going to do a lot of sleeping and watching
football this weekend.

Hey, guys! Sounds like Dave here has a good sense of humor....i vote we
keep him!

Hey, Dave! Happy Friday! Hope the wknd affords you some relief.

Just wanted to tell you, some folks get relief from Nyquil or Benedryl. I
know, i know, but several have mentioned it in years past.

Even for well people, that meeting sounds like torture :-),

Dave, I moved up here to Colorado just about two years ago from Dallas. I
remember how much those trees bothered me and I struggled with my allergies.
Now I fight the new trees here by the rocky mountains.

I use the T3 for the same thing...to sleep during a migraine. It doesn't
stop pain as much as it puts me to sleep if I take two of them. I usually
have to take Vicodin during the day and that does help with the pain...if
I'm careful not to take too much or I get sick.

I think there are some things that should never be done in business...8 am
meetings on any days, but Mondays are torture. No one should have meetings
that last longer than an hour, and no meetings beyond 2:00 on Friday
afternoons when people start the downward slide. One would wonder then,
when would I meet...after 10:00 in the morning, but done by noon at the
latest. 2-4 any day but Friday. That leaves more than enough time to bore
people to death ;-)

Thanks for the friendly welcome, sorry I haven't been around to

Latest update:

Still having problems, but the intensity is WAY down. I'm able to function
normally, just not very happily. But I'll take that for now. Saw
a neurologist for the first time, and had an MRI on the noggin. Haven't
seen results of the MRI yet. Haven't been to the ER for any treatment, but have
tried several prescriptions.

Maxalt: Been on this for years, but BCBS no longer covers it, so I won't
be taking it much longer. In this particular case, it's effective for about 4
hours, then the headache returns.

Zomig: My replacement for Maxalt. Same situation as above, it's currently good
for only a few hours.

Relpax: Tried samples of this for the first time. Took a long time to
take effect, but provided the longest relief of anything I've taken during the
past several weeks.

Migranol (nose spray): Tried sample of this. Had no effect at all. Could
be my fault - I've never been good at nose sprays, I hate the feeling of them.
Also have nasal allergies right now, so the absorption may not have been
ideal.

T3: Tried this (and a barbituate that I can't recall right now) for a few
days, and it had absolutely no effect on me. Maybe helped me sleep, but I really
didn't have too much trouble sleeping anyway. Quit taking this, as I didn't need
any dependancy issues creeping in.

Neurologist discussed admitting me in to the hospital for IV ergotamine
treatment, but we haven't done that yet. That's a last resort, I hope. I
feel I've made progress, and since I don't have to take time off work anymore,
I can cope. I'm definately sick and tired of it, but at least I'm not
cranky all the time anymore.

Thanks for reading (or listening, if you have someone reading usenet aloud to you).

Have a nice weekend - I plan to. I'm going to have a big cinnamon roll.
