Author Interesting way I broke through my killer migraine

Yesterday I left work with an absolute screamer of a migraine. I had taken
my zomig and some excedrin earlier in the day, but it just kept escalating.
By the time I got home, I was ready for Vicodin. I took 750 mg of Vicodin
over a two hour period. It just wasn't getting better and I could see the
24-36 hour cycle beginning. You all know how your cycles go. Well mine
start out slow, escalate to peak performance, then start on the downward
slope. Typically I'll get really nauseas...which I was. I finally took my
sleeping meds and thought I'd try to sleep. Yeah, right.

Well the next step was digging out my DHE 45 shots. Gave myself the shot
and waited about an hour...nothing. Then I remembered something I read in
Dr. Robb's articles last week in the hormone article. It mentioned taking
prednisone to kill a cycle or something like that. I remember my
neurologist offering me a steroid shot a couple of months ago when I had a
bad cycle going...I turned it down. Well this time I remembered that I had
one of those Medrol packs in my medicine cabinet. I use it for joint pain
when it gets bad. Each pill is 4 mg of steroids. I took three of them.
Wouldn't you know it in a couple of hours the migraine was totally and
completely gone. I slept the rest of the night and woke up feeling great.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I know when I have a migraine that bad there is at least, bare minimum, 24
hours of pain to come. This time I dropped it down to probably 10 and who
knows if I could have killed it earlier had I thought of it. Maybe everyone
already knows this stuff, I just never did.

Just thought I'd share that as a piece of good news.

That is good news. And that type of steroid is used to treat
arthritis, asthma, and ALLERGIES. It seems like a pretty good hint
that you may be suffering due to a food allergy.

Hi Jackie, I used three/4mg MethylPrednisone. They are in my medrol pack,
which if you're not familiar with that, it's a 6 day dosage pack used for
allergic reactions. You start out on the first day taking six pills until
you get down to the last day taking one pill. When I had allergic reactions
I never had to take that much. I was pretty much covered the first day.
So, I've kept my medrol packs for when I have joint pain related to my
hormonal cycles now and then. I'm on continuous bcps, but now and then my
knees flare up. The steroids help with that.

I took it all different times of the day. After I figured out how it
helped, I took it when I got another one and it helped. However, since it
seemed to be on a cycle...it came back. I've never had a problem taking
steroids day or night. They make me jittery after several days of taking
them though.

Oh, and the hormonal migraines are my killers as well. It seems nothing
helps. I believe this was a hormonal migraine since I had stopped my pills
for a week and had just restarted them a week before. So maybe it can help
you?

Actually, in this case it was a hormonal migraine caused by going off my
birth control pills the week prior. I normally got these a week after the
cycle. I'm also a pretty bland eater and don't venture out much. We've
been on Atkins for several weeks, so I was eating stuff I normally eat.

I've also had a lot of success in the past breaking a cycle with
prednisone...
I was always warned about the potential side effects but the benefit far
outweighed the risk...
then I saw what kind of side effects they were talkign about when Marty had
to be on prednisone after his transplant.

It can be a real scary situation.
I saw the mood swings they talk about up close and personal along with
eating and eating and eating, he just couldn't eat enough to get rid of the
hunger.

I know how it feels to have a bad cycle broken, it is euphoric to say the
least, but please do keep in mind the harmful effects that this steroid can
have.

Interesting that you mention the eating. I only took a small dosage, but it
always makes me so hungry...or rather makes my stomach feel hungry and even
growl. It was awful and I was glad I was only taking it a day or so.

Don't know if it's pertinent but my poor dog gained 10 pounds on prednisone
for allergies!! Poor dog couldn't get enough to eat OR drink. Uh..... he
also ate the assorted "poops" he came across on our walks in the woods
despite my screaming and yelling.

Just a friendly warning.....
