Author ADD+codeine?

Heya guys,

One of my children's friends came to play today and at 3pm he had to
take his meds... he's got ADD so I was surprised he had a little blue
pill, turns out he's been prescribed codeine for his ADD.

I've not heard of this before, have any of you? His father says it helps
and without side-effects too apart from some higher blood-pressure
spikes in the first few weeks.

Is this an unusual treatment or am I just the last in the know?

Unless the codeine is for something else. I'm pretty sure doctors aren't
supposed to prescribe it over long periods of time for any reason.

Pill or capsule? Strattera is a small blue capsule.

Low-potency opiates/opioids can be used before bedtime for RLS/PLMD
a.k.a. "Restless Leg Syndrome" or "Periodic Limb Movement Disorder".

(This is a disruptive sleep disorder that some ADD/ADHDers can exhibit).

Sleep disorders are being more frequently associated with ADD/ADHD. Sleep
apnea, in particular.

PLMD is diagnosed by a sleep study (polysomnography).

I've heard of Immodium but don't know what it is so I'm not sure which
side effects of stimulant medication codeine would help.

His doc(don't know what kind of doc) told them Ritalin wasn't helpful
for ADD, just for AD_H_D. I'm trying to remember the time I was
prescribed codeine for a short while and how it effected me but for the
life of me can't recall being better able to concentrate which is what
the child's father said it did.

Another ADHD medication that isn't available here yet... you lucky
people having so many alternatives to try!

The codeine was prescribed to help the child concentrate, he takes it 3x
per day the last dose at 3pm.

I also thought codeine wasn't supposed to be prescribed for longer
periods but can't recall if that was to prevent it losing it's effect or
because of a risk of dependency.

It was a pill, Strattera isn't available here in the Netherlands... in
fact we've only had Concerta here for just under a year. His father did
say it was codeine.

I was surprised that someone else had these symptoms (though mine do not
seem to be consistant--some days are worse than others, but I am on a
relatively small dose). Immodium is the brand name for Loperamide (which
can be ought generically):

There are a number of studies that have found that methylphenidate was
helpful for ADHD inattentive.

Sounds like this doctor woefully uneducated about ADHD.

In all the reading I've done about ADHD, I've never come across a
mention that I can recall of codeine's being prescribed for ADHD.

Seems to me that codeine which can produce brain fog and sedation, is
precisely the kind of med that would make ADHD inattentive symptoms worse.

I've always had the impression that codeine was highly addictive. A quick
Google search shows no references to its use as a treatment for ADHD. I'm
not a health professional, but if this were my kid, I'd get a second opinion
pronto.

I ruptured a disk in my lower back in 1992, and I ended up on a really high
dose of codeine pain meds. I can tell you that it *definitely* makes my ADD
worse! I would prefer to not take codeine if I can avoid it, because it
makes me so stupid I can scarcely stand to be around myself. I'm frankly
astonished that anyone would prescribe it for Inattentive ADD.

There, that's what I thought too! Muscle relaxants do the same to me and
I think codeine did too but to a lesser extent with the low dose I was
using. Next time I get the chance I'll double check I heard the father
correctly.

Mmmmm, I have codeine for my migraines. If anything I would think it would
make you not be hyperactive, in that you could stay on task BECAUSE you are
in a fog.

I am going to pay attention to how I feel next time I have to take it and am
able to function.
