| I found out today that the Dr my Mum is under in the care facility here
discontinued her Aricept back in July.
I posted awhile back re him playing around with Mums Risperdal reduced
it and then increased it again.
That Valium had been given to Mum to stop her wandering and I thought
she couldnt walk due to perhaps an injury to her hip from a fall.
I have been reading all the old posts here back to 2001on Aricept there
is certainly a lot of information.
Mum has definately declined badly in the past few months and now I will
never know if it was going to happen or was it the withdrawil from the
Aricept.
I feel cheated and very disillusioned tonight.When we first placed Mum
in this facility there was a different Director of Nursing and I was
always singing her praises and that of the home,but in the last few
months have noticed a lot of changes and jump up and down but now feel
it is falling on deaf ears.
I have made a appointment with my Mums old Dr here for a second opinion
a thorough checkup and a look at the mess that is left from the removal
of a cancer on her scalp some 2 months ago at which the Dr did not get
it all and for 2 months every time I ask what is going to be done I am
told when the area has healed well its not healed yet?
So maybe I will feel better after this second opinion or perhaps the
familiarity of discussing the issues with a Dr I trust.

| Michelle, did you not have a voice in who her doctor would be. I did when
my dad went to a nursing home so I changed from the one they usually used.
I had no confidence in him at all.

Enduring power of Attorney of course I naturally assumed all medical
decisions would be discussed with us?
How wrong can you be.
I am afraid I am not a person to let things go so I intend making a few
phone calls this afternoon to find out a few more legalities re this
situation.
I am feeling rather defeated and down today not like me at all but i am
sure I will be able to rally enough to get my feistyness back and fight
the ongoing fight both for my Mum and other AD/Dementia sufferers.
I tend to feel this Dr has an attitude of Oh well she has AD anyway as
I reminded him with another issue a couple of weks ago they are still
human beings with feelings too.
So the fight goes on.

Good for you! I do understand that nursing homes feel they have the right
to re-evaluate a patients needs for meds and to change them accordingly, but
I think it has been pretty well proven that Aricept continues to have value
in helping them keep their cognition levels as high as possible, even in the
late stages of the game.
Stopping a drug that has no value anymore is one thing, but stopping a drug
that has been proven to help, even in late stages, is another. I also
think you should be notified of medication changes so you can observe your
loved one and see if there is any difference in their level of function.
The nursing homes don't seem to think they owe that to the relatives of the
people in their care, and I don't know why that is.
We had the same experience, where they changed or stopped certain meds
without telling us anything about it. Not that I would have disputed the
decision, since I had already seen several changes while she was still home
with us, but I would have liked more communication about it.

| Yes the office of the Public advocate said communication was definately
the problem here and I agree evelyn that the nursing homes should have
a better and improved role in this and not just assume that the family
does not want to know.I will discuss with the Dr Friday(2nd opinion) I
have found out that the lower the number scale here In Australia of the
mini mental exam denies the right to Aricept being given at the lower
cost but am now interested in knowing if it can be re prescribed if we
pay for it.
Maybe I am plucking at straws but really what have I got to lose in the
end anyway.
I have been advised to notify the Home and Dr there,about the families
wishes re further communication issues.I will do this re letter better
than a forgotten conversation I think.
If there are any further problems there is a complaints agency I can go
to fingers crossed.
