What is the "proper" way to dispose of used hearing aid batteries?

We collect them in a large peanut container and dispose of them at the
annual hazardous waste round-up. Not just HA batteries, but all the
hordes of batteries used in the Diskmans & GameBoys, etc. Kids go
through A LOT of batteries!

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to throw them in the trash...in California,
at least.
