Author voice to text converter

I am looking for a device (preferably handheld) that can convert voice to
text and then display what was said. I am very hard of hearing and would
like something that I can use to carry on a conversation with people.

So are we all. It will come but not yet - there are software problems
to be overcome.

The sad thing is that even an imperfect device would, I believe, be
snapped up by many - even if it got many words wrong or offered several
alternatives. See recent discussion on devices which show the speech
frequency spectrum graphically. We who cannot hear reach out for
information which may help and our brains (even geriatric ones) quickly
learn to interpret it.

Have you considered Cochlear Implants?

The best that is available at the moment is:

1. a computer running voice recognition software. This will only work at the
moment with speakers that have taken the trouble to train the system with
their voice pattern. This takes about 15 minutes for each speaker. I have
used this to carry out a conversation with an adult who had recently become
deaf, and wanted me to write everything down. She was delighted when I used
my laptop to transcribe what I was saying in this way.

2. a service whereby a telephone picks up the voice of the speaker and
relays it to a centre that uses people to repeat what is said into speech
recognition software. The software turns this into text and the text is then
sent back to the HI person.

Finally someone has come up with an IDEA that I agree
would work.

Thanks.

I've been using this for years but I suspect that the speech to text
part is done by real humans in the present TTY system. My gut feeling is
that most translators would probably prefer typing to speaking into a
mic. As usual, I could be wrong. :-)
