| ONE award is given from each department for the Freshman class at our
high school. It's a local Rotary club award for the "Most Promising
Freshman". Guess who won for Social Studies?
Quote:
"Samantha Burns is a deserving recipient of the (Rotary club) award. She
hears not only with her cochlear implant, she hears with her eyes, heart
and soul. She has absorbed so much history over the course of the school
year and has a great sense of what I like to refer to as the =93process o=
f
history=94 =97 the idea that history is a progression of events. Samantha=
sees the =93forest of history=94 as well as the trees and is able to
communicate that beautifully in her contributions to class discussions,
her writing and, most definitely, her cartoon artistry. Sam has chosen
to continue in the Honors Social Studies program and will take AP
European History in her sophomore year. I know that, given her
dedication to Honors World History, she will continue to shine in that
course. I am pleased to have gotten to know such a unique and special
young woman.
Mrs. A"
Please note that this is a fairly large high school (2500 students), 650
are Freshmen. Samantha is the only deaf student. Without that pesky
"Health" class from last semester, she's back to a 4.0 and still on the
Honor Roll. What a great year!

| There are times when a little bragging is most definitely called for, and
this is certainly one. That is really great.
