Answering machine - recommendations?

| Anyone have an answering machine they're really happy with? Need good
volume and variable speed playback. Has anyone tried the Ameriphone
(Clarity Products) Easy Recall? Thanks!

Do you happen to have the option of a message bank service and an
amplified telephone?... Only thing it probably won't give you is
variable speed playback. Also has the advantage of not losing your
messages when the power fails.
It's almost impossible for me to understand other than a very clear
speaker on a standard telephone (with or without telecoil) whereas the
amplified phone is fine so long as the caller speaks the same
language.
I'm not in America BTW. In Australia amplified phones are supplied to
anyone who's hearing impaired (by Telstra, on application, at no extra
charge).

John,
I'm in oz and didn't know that. I guess I have to rent a Telstra handset,
right? Renting a handset looked like a bad idea given how cheaply they can
be bought. Is your amplified phone a 'Telstra' phone? Maybe they sell them,
too.

AFAIK handset rental is included in their service charge, though you
may have the option of buying it if you don't already own or rent a
Telstra phone. The Telstra amplified phone (with volume control and
louder ring) simply replaces their standard one and looks almost
identical.
I've had mine for quite a few years. Initially it was a matter of
calling Telstra on one of their special numbers (might be the enquiry
line for people with disabilities, but I don't remember for certain).
The thing I do remember is that the person who took the call was an
exceptionally clear speaker, obviously hand picked for the job. They
also required a note from a GP for confirmation before they'd supply
it. There was no up front charge or change to my service charges that
I'm aware of.
I'd be lost without it as it's pretty much the only phone I can
comfortably and reliably use.

It's an extra change on the bill. It's the default when you open an account
but, compared to the cost of buying a handset, rental is way expensive.
