| Anyone have carb cravings with effexor ex? I seem to go in streaks then all
of a sudden I'm off to the store for m&m's or something. Has anyone gained
weight while on this. Overall if you still take it does it work well for
you and at what dosages?

| Effexor is known as the "extra strength" antidepressant. Its
particularly effective for severe depressions and is most powerful at
high dosages...225 mg and up. When you get high dose Effexor going, you
are hitting all three of the major monoamine
neurotransmitters...serotonin and norephinephrine strongly and dopamine
mildly. No other modern class AD does this except for Cymbalta.
Just watch the old blood pressure on it, especially at higher dosages.

| Weight loss, and increased appetite and weight gain, are both reported
side effects of Effexor.

| I was on Effexor for about 8 months and lost a crazy amount of weight, but I
was also dieting at the time. When I started taking it, it just boosted the
weight loss and made it easier to lose. I experienced extreme energy while
on it. I stopped it because it made the hypomania more extreme and i was
constantly a nervous wreck.

I've been on the AD Leapro for 3 years and it is said to be weight
neutral. I've only fluctuated +/- 5 # from my normal weight during
that time. You might want to ask your p-doc about it.

| Tried effexor a few years ago - this stuff is sooooo strong, its not an
antidepressant, its speed.... It got me back on my feet. Then, I couldn't
sleep for a month. Quit, just too hardcore. + killed me from the waist down -
zero libido.

| Im not a doctor but from what I understand it is the reason why Effexor is
so bad to stop taking is as a direct result of its short halflife. I went
from Effexor to EsCitalopram with no withdrawal from the Effexor, I hear of
other people doing similar, going from Effexor to Prozac - Prozac has a
long half life and therefore has less withdrawal. When I stopped taking
Citalopram I had the constant zing head zap things whenever I moved my
head or eyes quickly.... even moving my eyes when they were shut made the
brain zap! I was terrified it would not stop but it did, after about 2
weeks for me. Have you thought about the extended release version of
Effexor? You wont have to worry about missing the dose then as you just
take one a day.
Also, I am not that surprised about your doctor not knowing about the
symptoms of withdrawal, I have come accross quite a few GP's who are
totally unaware of the head zap thing when stopping SSRI's. I am
surprised that he thought Welbrutin would compensate though - Welbrutin
and Effexor affect totally different neurotransmitteres.
