The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in February 2005.
For members using AOL over a dial-up connection, you will no longer be
able to access AOL Newsgroups.
If you have a separate high-speed connection, you can contact your
broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups.
Newsgroup services can often be accessed through a third party reader,
such as Mozilla Thunderbird
(http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/).
Alternatively, you can access Newsgroups via Google at
http://groups.google.com/.
We apologize for this inconvenience.
Get a webtv we have news groups coming out the kazoo!!

I believe AOL may have decided to discontinue newsgroups to protect
customers like Eric.
The revised Can-Spam Act effective in March 2003 apparently contains a
broadened definition of "spam" which seems to make electronic messages
intended to harass and abuse "spam" in the eyes of federal lawmakers.

I believe AOL is discontinuing newsgroups to protect AOL customers like
Eric.
The new definition of "spam" in the Revised Can-Spam Act, effective in
March, was broadened so the "spam" which Federal law now prohibits
apparently may include electronic messages whose intent is to abuse and
harass.

This just isn't true. The `Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited
Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003' contains very explicit definitions
of the commercial emails being targeted in Sec 3 para 2.
Nothing there can be construed as defining the target of the Can Spam Act
as personal non-commerical emails.
Full text of the Act:

| The Federal Trade Commission's broadened the definition of "Spam" it
prohibits in the Can-Spam Act so the Act "might" be used to prosecute
immoral, cowardly abusive bullies who are forever posting lies,
distortions, and negative PROPAGANDA and HYPE that are in essence
negative campaign adverstisements ---they seek to profit by
posting...by eliminating participation of persons they ahve vendettas
against.
Takes effect in March 2005..

No, the FTC does not agree with you or your definition of 'negative
campaign advertisements'. I've included the FTC ruling but I doubt it will
make any headway with you.
The FTC made a clarification on the definitions of what consitutes
commercial messages, these clarifications are if anything, more focused on
commercial activities. Private, non-commerical correspondence are strictly
outside the pervue of the Act. There is nothing contained here that alludes
to enforcement of against anything but commericial messages and in fact
there are statements clarifying the non-applicability to private messages.

Naturally, the legal eagles excited about the expanded definition of
"spam" as including abusive/harassing messages on usenet are referring
to the lies, distortions, propaganda and hype cybergangbangers post
to usenet's PUBLIC GLOBAL forums which are then archived by google AND
being uploaded to the WWW by commercial enterprises.
I believe AOL concerns about the provisions of the CanSpam ACT being
applicable to newsgroups---weighed heavily in AOL decisions to
discontinue providing AOL customers direct access to usenet.
Of course, I could be wrong...I have been before. :-)
