Author Uh Huh

Hi Everyone:

I've noticed something with Kidlet, and wondered if anyone else has noticed
this with TS (+). When he starts talking about something, every third word
is "uh huh" or a throat clearing. He'll keep at this until he suddenly gets
angry, then yells something like "Leave me alone". He'll be quiet for 5 or
10 minutes then start his story again without any Uh huh's or throat
clearing.

I know I've read something about vocal tics, but that was many years ago in
"Teaching the Tiger". The resources I have that are more up to date again
mention vocal tics, but nothing about this kind of thing.

Any ideas?

Naomi

Naomi, who is he yelling "Leave me alone" to? Is he yelling back at
his TS? Is the Uh-huh a tic-like sounds, or a response-like sound? I'm
sure it's most likely NOT that he is responding mentally to anyone,
but I would explore it with him just to be sure.
Perhaps the angry out-burst drains him enough, and the quiet 5 or 10
minutes allows him to settle down or slow his system down enough (in a
bio-feedback sort of way) so that he may then continue without the
tics. Would encouraging him gently to breathe help any? Many
kids/adults with TS will get excited when they speak, especially when
trying to tell a story or anecdote, and they will literally not stop
to breathe properly! (hey, many people do this, TS or not!). I've
found with myself and the clients I've worked with, that helping
people remember to slow down and breathe properly can indeed help
minimize ticcing, especially the verbal grunts, throat-clearings, etc.
By relaxing the diaphragm, words can flow more smoothly, and the
breathing does help the nervous system relax, which I truly believe is
a huge key to reducing tics, both temporarily in the short-term and
over longer periods as well, by slowing the sympathetic nervous
system.....

Anyway, whatever this is with Kidlet, it will probably pass...assuring
him "It's OK, take your time" etc might help him.....
I know how hard it must be for you to see him struggle like this....

My son does this a lot. But usually it's a swear word, he also stutters a
lot when telling me a story. He will yell when becoming frustrated with his
story not being told the right way.The he stops, it seems like he clears his
mind and starts again without the swear words.

Hmmm, Many years ago, we had a skinny young assistant prof lecturing in a
college biology class who was telling us some really fascinating stuff about
DNA and how the bases paired off in a spiral, encoding proteins etc. The
acoustics in the hall were pretty bad, he talked with his head down, and
about every fifthe word was "Uh." I approached the course director and
toldhim about this and suggested they consider getting a grad student to
read his lectures or perhaps enroll him in Toastmansters. The course
director listened courteusly, thanked me, but said he thought they would
keep Dr. Watson in the lineup. About two years later, he shared a Nobel
prize with Dr. Crick for the work he was describing. I told that story to
someone else a few years back and was told he probably still spoke that way.
I don't think that was TS, I think he had just never learned public
speaking, but I wonder. . . .

Crikey, Sandy, how old are you?!!! My memory must be bad, I thought
Crick and Watson were from the 30's or 40's...50's??

But seriously, I know some of the smartest people in the world are NOT
the best orators!

This sounds familiar to me, though I can't say it was ever as intense as
what you describe. I would probably shut up and never tell the story.

To be a good orator you have to think at talking speed. Most of us think
far faster.

That encounter would have been about 1960. I turned 65 last week, making me

I have to admit I did think of when Kidlet was younger (4 - 8 years old)
when he had "monsters" coming through the ceiling and would build "monster
traps" on the farm (on pathways, etc). He seems to be struggling to tell
his story without interference. I have mentioned to him he can slow down,
I'm not going anywhere and can wait for his story but it doesn't seem to
take too much before he gets mad. I know there's some really smart people
who have speech issues, for example, I have a cousin who is a genius and
speaks like he's on perpetual pot even though he's never touched the stuff
*LOL*.

We'll try the breathing and see what happens.

Boy, do I feel for you Bob. When Kidlet was little (5 years old or so), he
would be "removed" for flailing. I know it was for the safety of the other
children, but I often wonder how much damage was done to his self esteem.

I only hope some day he can articulate like you.
