Well, put, Bob.
PTSD is a very real thing due to very real events. False beliefs may or may
not be involved. The answer is to not just stop thinking about something.
That's like asking an infant to stop using so many diapers. It's just not
gonna work.
There is no "answer." There are possible treatments that might reduce/get
rid of some of your PTSD symptoms. The goal in PTSD treatment is to shrink
the event so that it can be integrated into the person...so it was just
another event. Still powerful, perhaps, but not so overwhelming. Some
people advocate EMDR. I am more "old fashioned" and prefer the "long
way"...the Judith Herman way. It's a three step phase: Creating safety;
remembering and grieving the loss; and reconnecting to the whole of life (in
how ever way that might look).
I'll probably get yelled at for "playing therapist" on usenet, but I am just
passing along knowledge I have about PTSD.
