Nissen Surgery- Recovery Slow....Very Weak-Blood Test Results

| Hello Fellow Members:
As you remember I had the Nissen surgery a little over (3) months ago.
The healing process was abit slow but the acid pain went away after 2-3
weeks and a 24ph test conformed this. Here in lies the problem.
Approximately 3 weeks after surgery, and for the last (3) weeks I have
been painfully weak. I began to get very fatigued and weak. I went to
my GI who scoped and biopsied me from top to bottom. Results: No cancer
and other diseases. My physician has directed me to see a neurologist,
rheumatologist, ear, nose and throat specialist. The general
speculation is that I need more time to heal and my energy level will
come back. However my GI surgeon disagrees and says its got to be
something else. My primary physician conducted numerous blood tests.
Some of the results were out of the range:
Ketone-UA- Trace *A
Lymphs 19 (low)
ReacLymp 1 (High)
Bun 23 (High)
Tbil 1.12 (High)
CO2 20 (low)
Copper 60 (low)
B-12 325 (Low normal)
I am not sure where to turn to at this point. My GI just wants me to
take vitamins and ride it out for 3-4 more months. Does this make any
sense?

| I had vitamin B12 levels around 300 in Feb. and was tired and aggressive
both of which are signs of deficiency. I was told by a specialist with my
health insurance that the blood levels of vitamin B12 are not always
indicative of what is really going on because the body has a big reserve
(primarily
the liver), which can get depleted over the years and he advised me to
supplement. I suggest that you try 1 mg
vitamin B12 sublingually per day and see if you notice any change - it won't
harm and it is relatively cheap. If you have been on acid suppressants for
many years this can lead to deficiency.
I am feeling significantly better after
supplementing (with virtually everything in my case due to the short bowel
syndrome, GERD and Crohn's) and can actually see again.
Another thing would be to look at your sleep hygiene. Are you a snorer? Have
you excess weight? Have you (developed) sleep apnoe? Do you have problems
with your
tonsils or upper respiratory tract? This would require a trip to a sleep
laboratory. If you don't know whether or not you snore then you could always
record yourself!
Perhaps, you could try some Ensure for a couple of days to see whether or
not that makes a difference to your energy levels. You were probably run
down before the operation and it was just the straw that broke the
proverbial camel's back.
If I think of anything else I will let you know.
Hang on in there. I empathise because I struggle with chronic tiredness and
am severely disabled because of it.
