| I have always drunk quite heavily but recently I have quite bad
abdominal pain after hitting it hard over the weekend. I suspect
gastritis or an ulcer and OTC Zantac provided some relief but the doc
prescribed lansoprazole. I can find all sorts of information on the
web except - how long it takes before you get relief - i.e. cessation
or lessening of pain? If I dont get relief is there something else
going on - pancreatitis for example?
Would appreciate any comments, cheers G

Gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, ulcer, gastritis. If serum amylase and
lipase are normal, and lansoprazole doesn't help after 3-4 days, time for an
ultasound of the gallbladder and subsequent EGD if the ultrasound is normal.

| Alcohol is one of the things that reflux/GERD sufferers should avoid.
Unfortunately, the tablets don't work on their own and a number of lifestyle
changes must be made, diet, lose weight, not eat late at night, etc., in
order to get the reflux/GERD under control. If you are one of the fortunate
ones you might be able to come off the tablets eventually. However, it is a
chronic condition for most of us and many consider an operation to tighten
the LEV (lower oesophagal valve).
Here are a couple of my favourite articles:
Life-style changes for the management of GERD

GERD article: http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc85.html
All the best,
V.

| Thanks very much for the replies. I have got some relief now and I am
definately going to lay of the booze. It would appear my problem is
gastric rather oesophageal which may be simpler... good luck to you
both and thanks
