Hi, I'm new to the group and I was wondering how you guys cope with
heartburn. I have noticed heartburn for several weeks now and have tried a
variety of techniques like raising the head of my bed, gargling with salt
water, nasonex etc. I'm also anxiously waiting to get my barium test.
Thanks.

Hi Lese...I have been taking proton pump inhibitors (prevacid, prilosec,
etc) for many years now, but they can cause stomach polyps (and have in my
case). The H2 blockers (zantac, pepsid, etc) are safer but much less
effective, but may work for you.

If your heartburn is persistent, I recommend you go to a gastro and get an
EGD, and see if there is any damage to your esophagus, and go from there.
Your primary care doctor will do nothing but try you on a regimen of PPI's
(prilosec is OTC), or H2 blockers (all of them OTC).

I would say it is ill advised to keep taking the PPI's long term without an
EGD. :-)

HTH...Pete
