She didnt think it was an Ulcer since Im not vomitting and theres no
blood...

But she thinks it is gerd.

She said to try Zantac, but the Zantac FAQs say that bleeding a side
effect too.
Whats up with Tagamet?

Can I EVER eat treats again? (PLEASE answer this one)

Preesi...Howard can correct me if I don't state this quite right. The four
main H2 blockers will all have similar side effects, but a particular one
may effect one person differently than another. I would say if you tried two
of the four (and you got nose bleed with the second one also), that I would
not keep trying anymore (but you could try all of them if you want to).

In the same token, as far as you eating treats, my common sense answer is
that you know better than anyone else, what causes you discomfort after
eating it, and what doesn't. If it bothers you, then don't eat it or drink
it. There are general guidelines for do's and don't's on what to eat for
various maladies, but only the individual person can tell. The problem is
that you may have to carefully stop everything and add one thing at a time
to see which ones are good and bad, and that is one big pain in an XXX (like
in trying to determine a food allergy). It is not an easy thing to do.
Good luck...Pete

If you need to do it, the best time for treats is in the morning, but you
might have to forgo them especially in the early stages of trying to find
the right treatment for your GERD. I assume that you have been told to take
your tablet(s) an hour before breakfast.

I made myself sick over Xmas by trying to eat just one or two chocolates in
the evening, but I found that if I ate a treat with breakfast this did not
have severe repercussions.

If you want to get a handle on GERD you have to make the necessary lifestyle
changes. After all you don't want to develop Barrett's and from there cancer
of the oesophagus. I refer you to the articles I posted for you a few days
ago for further tips and information.

Oh brother....

May very well be right. It's not difficult to prove. At the very least, she
should have sent you home with a month-long empiric trial of a proton pump
inhibitor like Nexium/Protonix/Aciphex/Prevacid. Especially in view of the
fact that you're having nose bleeds that *might* be related to the H2
receptor antagonist (Pepcid) that you've been taking. If the PPI makes your
symptoms go away, that's a reasonable presumptive diagnosis of GERD.

It depends on the "treat". Chocolate, for example, contains caffiene, which
contributes to inappropriate relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter,
which in turn allows reflux.

Is that the reason coffee makes you poop right after drinking it?

No, caffiene might directly stimulate the lower GI tract by itself. The LES
isn't connected to the small intestine or colon in any way.

Preesi...Why do you keep saying tagament. I already explained in great
detail (in the nose bleed thread) the difference between the H2 blockers
(ie, pepsid, zantac, axid, and tagament) and the proton pump inhibitors
(PPI's) that Howard just mentioned. You will need a prescription for one of
the PPI's (with the exception of prilosec, 20mg, which is available OTC),
but I'm sure your doctor has trial samples. Like I said the PPI's are much
more effective (and I explained why), and are the drugs of choice for GERD
as well as other gastro related conditions in the upper GI tract, where it
is desirable to increase the ph of the stomach to aid in the healing of
erosions, or for treatment of the various inflammatory conditions (the
"itis's") that may exist.

Like I said there is about a 4% risk of fundic polyps resulting from long
term use of PPI's, plus the standard type side effects you can read about by
googling. Howard just recommended your doctor try you on a one month trial
of one of the PPI's, since you think the pepcid may be causing your nose
bleeds. Ask your doctor for a trial sample of one of the PPI's.

Other than that, you may want to go to a gastroenterologist and ask for an
EGD, if you continue to have the pain you mention...Pete

I really dont wanna go that route yet..
I read another thread about PPIs having DHEA interference and I dont
wanna grow a beard and go bald...
Im on Tagamet atm and seem fine today...
I just have a feeling that this is due to drinking way too much fresh
brrewed black coffee (after drinking nothing but instant for 4 yrs) and
going wild with food after I was told all my diabetes tests came back
negative..
I really have an issue with stuffing myself, EVEN with healthy food
Ive also been REALLY stressed out...

Just could be wishful thinking...

BTW there is a baby formula out there for babies that have GERD and its
basically Coffeemate Coffee Creamer with vitamins...

I am female and have been taking PPIs since February 2003, nexium up to
December 2004 and then I switched to pantoprazole. The nexium gave me
stomach ache and if I took more than 20 mg over a protracted period (2-6
weeks) I developed signs of toxicity. I have been doing better on
pantoprazole, but developed joint pains in January when I was on 80 mg for a
couple of days.

I have not read anywhere that PPIs have hormonal/testosterone effects and I
read extensively.

Preesi,

FWIW, assuming I've been correctly diagnosed with GERD (which I think I
have), I can definitely say that MY symptoms are much worse during my
cycle.

Hope that helps,
Laura
