Hello Fellow Members:

Has anyone ever tried apple vineger for a heartburn attack? Just
curious if it works.

Good question...I have read (and been told) that's it great, but the damn
stuff burns so much its like biting your hand off (can't think of the rest
of the cliche :-)). This gets into the acid type foods versus the acid
forming type food stuff. I say if it burns everything going down (ie
throat, esophagus, and stomach) than I'm not taking it. Even when you
dilute it to the recommended solution it still burns. But some people swear
by it...Pete

Try ginger, I grate it and make an infusion others use a liquidiser and
drink a tea spoonful of the liquid on an empty stomach twice a day. I burnt
out the motor on a new liquidiser trying that optio :-) I took it back for a
refund.

Burns initially but helps in time.

Derek...I have some ginger capsules that I stopped taking long ago and they
expired in January. They are 500 mgs each and it says to take one or two
capsules twice a day as a dietary supplement (In addition to the burning, it
has a strong taste when you belch afterward). I also tried the grated
infusion you mentioned.

What do you mean by burns initially but helps in time (ie a few hours after
you take it). Or did you mean you have to be on a regimen of it for weeks
to a month or more, to notice an over all improvement in GERD
symptoms...Pete

More to the point, what do any of you perceive as the mechanism by which
ginger root affects GERD symptoms?

That was what a poster said on this NG when I read it last year.

Howard and Derek...I do not see anything that addresses the mechanism in the
posts in the site that Derek provided, or in his response to your (Howard's)
question. Ginger is an old time remedy for supposedly soothing the stomach,
and I guess it has also been touted for heartburn relief, but I for one do
not know what the mechanism is, or if it helps heartburn, but apparantly
other posters say it does, and don't worry about the mechanism.

And I do believe that it may or could be a double edged sword (ie if it
burns the upper tract on the way down, and gives a warm feeling in your
stomach, it could be questionable if it is good for heartburn (which assumes
it is either neutralizing, or reducing the production of stomach acid
somehow - the latter being the more doubtful of the two IMO). One of the
posts in the site that Derek mentioned said that it did make symptoms worse
in some people.

Tried it long ago...Aloe juice (even the orange flavored) is one of the most
bitter, nasty tasting things known to man. The plain flavor was really bad.
Couldn't tolerate it long enough to see if it would help :-) ...Pete

Ginger in anything but mild doses makes my GERD flare something rotten. Of
course candied ginger is a real nono, which is a shame because it has always
been my absolute favourite.

Perhaps, the "burns initially buts helps in time" indicates that nerve cells
are being anaesthetised or even destroyed.

I would also point out that lack of pain does not necessarily indicate
healing - 3rd degree burns are not painful because the nerve cells are
completely destroyed. The only way to ascertain conclusively whether or not
the oesophagus is healed is gastroendoscopy. Be careful and don't forget to
discuss everything with your doctor(s). They are there for a purpose.

Moving away from this thread as an aside: I have been having to go up to
60-80 mg pantoprazole/protonix per day (about 4-6 times) to control the
GERD, which raged when I had a bad bout of colic in January and at a
treatment dose of 40+ mg I started at the same time with a bad bout of
arthritis in my left hand and then my right hand. This was far different
from my Crohn's arthritis, which I routinely get in my knees and
occasionally in hands and back.

My doctor thought that it could be carpel tunnel syndrome, but I am off sick
at the moment and only use the computer moderately and my left hand comes
off fairly lightly. I attributed this to the protonix and have found joint
pain as a side effect somewhere on the web www.rxlist.com www.drugs.com . I
dropped the dose down to 20 mg and the joint pains went away, but this dose
does not control my GERD (despite a very unadventurous GERD adapted diet)
and I have had to raise this back to 40 mg (not over), but so far the joint
problem has not come back.
