GERD Article and my GERD symptom improvement
|
|
|
| I have located this 2002 GERD article, which, in my opinion, is well worth
the read.
http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc85.html
Interestingly enough the above-referenced article is one of the few that I
have found that mentions Crohn's Disease plus other diseases in relation to
GERD. Here, as a bonus, is another of my favourite GERD sites:
http://www.gicare.com/pated/ecdgs39.htm
I also wanted to report in on my GERD, the symptoms of which are now
negligible. I am currently on 20 mg maintenance pantoprazole daily.
So what happened? The tiredness that I was experiencing and queried here was
not, as many of you so rightly pointed out, part of GERD. In February this
year I had a complete adhesiolysis of the small intestine (I have no large
intestine), a resection of 30 cm intestine due to inadequate blood
circulation (tissue changes indicated that the intestine was dying and
showed residual non-active Crohn's Disease) and the ileostoma refashioned
due to a stoma stenosis (second one in 2 years). All this was causing
virtual stasis of my stomach and intestine in addition to the increased back
pressure from the adhesions wrapped around the intestine and the stoma
stenosis.
I have been eating some real rubbish (fish and chips, MacDonalds, chicken
nuggets, etc.) for the first time in 2 years. An amazing experience and only
occasionally have I had a few minor GERD rumblings. So if I want to come off
the PPIs I am going to have to still watch the diet. I need to discuss the
wisdom of this with my gastroenterologist, in the meantime I am taking the
maintenance PPIs. I need to keep up a very high calorie diet because I lost
7 kg and went down to 48 kg. I am now at 50.5 kg. Unfortunately, I have had
chronic diarrhoea with kidney/bladder problems since the operation, which
makes the weight gain extremely challenging. I am on the Ensure/Fortisip
equivalent in Germany to boost my diet.
Not quite cured, but my theory from my post on 15 Dec. 2004 was correct see
www.talkaboutsupport.com .
All the best,
Vanny (Crohn's Disease, GERD, NYHA 1 Heart failure, currently waiting for
another urgent op. date for a suspect abdo tumour and the treatment of
kidney/bladder problems as a result of the Feb. 2005 operation)
