My friend is breastfeeding her 1year old and taking oxycotin 20mg 3x's
a day. Should i be concerned and have a talk with her?

from the patient fact sheet:

"Labor and Delivery

OxyContin® is not recommended for use in women during and immediately
prior to labor and delivery because oral opioids may cause respiratory
depression in the newborn. Neonates whose mothers have been taking
oxycodone chronically may exhibit respiratory depression and/or withdrawal
symptoms, either at birth and/or in the nursery.

Nursing Mothers

Low concentrations of oxycodone have been detected in breast milk.
Withdrawal symptoms can occur in breast-feeding infants when maternal
administration of an opioid analgesic is stopped. Ordinarily, nursing
should not be undertaken while a patient is receiving OxyContin® because
of the possibility of sedation and/or respiratory depression in the
infant."

since there may not be any 'stopping' of the mother's use of the drug, the
infant would quite likely be subjected to some form of withdrawal whenever
breast feeding ceases.

the gestational effects are well documented and can be extremely serious,
at the same time, it isn't really totally understood [that i have read]
just what long term effects may be carried foreward by the infant as a
result of it's early exposure over a prolonged period of breast feeding.
what is known for certain is that the early developmental stage of an
infant does affect it for the rest of it's life.

would this include exposure to a drug like OxyContin? ... it's not
unreasonable to be concerned.

there probably needs to be an immediate discussion between your friend and
her doctor, and possibly monitoring of the child by the doctor.

Ahh hell ya, but she damn well better be a real good friend. Odds are
probably real good that if she has been doing this for a while that
the baby will go into withdrawal if she just stops so a consultation
with a medical professional should considered as well.

Do you know how long she has been doing this?
