| extremely constipated? I've taken it off and on for
the past 6-7yrs and these past 3-4 months I've
now just become very constipated. I know it's a
side effect and it's the only thing I can think of doing
it to me.
what do you use to help unconstipate yourself?
I picked up some laxatives from walmart tonight,
I'll try those and see, but would prefer to go natural
if possible. I have too much other chemicals in the ol'
body to keep putting more in.
Thanks

| Just about all opiates do it to me. I usually use laxatives, but I've
heard that grains such as wheat germ can help-mixed with water, or even
with milk, like a cereal.
Some other grains are marketed as "bulk" laxatives, and have little or
no chemicals added. However, if you try using these on an"as needed"
basis, elimination can be painful, because they do little to soften the
stools. If you are already constipated, use a chemical laxative,
containing a stool softener, once, and then try using one of the
natural methods.
How well it works on you, and how much you'll need, will depend on many
variables- your weight, metabolism, your morphine dosage, how much you
have eaten on a particular day-you name it. Start by using the
recommended dosage, but don't be surprised if you have to take more, or
less. Everyone is different.
Drinking plenty of water and juice, and eating plenty of
fruit-especially prunes and other dried fruit-will probably help, too.
I wish you luck. Being constipation IS miserable.

Yeah, I agree. I took an unusually large dose of codeine the week before
last (various reasons)... and in combination with the hot weather, and a
skip in my regular 'pattern', I had the most unpleasant surprise my body
has ever served me...
> I wish you luck. Being constipation IS miserable.
Yes, miserable fits. I won't go into details, but I was actually
considering calling an ambulance. Fortunately I managed to get a doctors
appointment on the same day, and I was treated.
In all, it was quite a traumatic experience.
Ps. I hope I'm not breaking any unspoken group rules, I haven't posted much
before.

Thanks, the package said 1-3, so I took 2 to start off with.
Figured that would be safe. Hasn't helped yet and took them
almost 5hrs ago. So guess we'll see by morning, thats when
it usually hits me I need to go.
I hate prunes! and raisins I cannot do unless I'm heading hypo.
Guess I can eat some wheatgerm or something like that. I normally
don't eat breakfast. And last time I ate cereal threw my system
into a tizzy so I tend to stay away from it now. Oatmeal tastes
like wallpaper paste to me LOL and I'm too lazy to nuke malt-o-meal.
I have to be careful with the carb/sugar content on juices but I'll
take a look when I'm at the market tomorrow. I'll also check what
they have for "wheat" products to help.
Thanks for the tea receipe. I'm not really a tea drinker but I'll
keep it handy just in case.

| Dear Jroma
Bigtime, bigtime, constipation. It can plug you up to the point of becoming
dangerous. OTC laxatives will work but it's a strange constipation, so a
stool softener isn't going to help much. You need one that contains a
stimulant. You can try the suggested dose but that was not written for those
of us on narcotics. You may want to just cut to the chase take the max dose
as a starting point and if nothing goes in 24 hours add another half max
dose. Needless to say once you achieve success you need to stick close to
the john, so don't go anywhere you need to wait for a stall.
And all narcotics do it. It's the one and only side effect that won't go
away and is difficult to treat or at least an inconvenience.
Lately I've been using Dulcolax, but Sennacot works (they make a stool
softener only so watch which you buy) Colace does ok too. In the quantity
you may blow through this stuff generic will do you fine and save a buck and
then some. There's also Rx stuff they can give you, usually powders or
liquids you have to mix with something to make them semi palatable.
Don't be embarrassed talking about it or bringing it up to a doctor.
Intestinal blockages can land you in the hospital and it's no joke. It can
kill you or you could spend the rest of your days pooping in a bag through a
tube. I don't want to scare you but I hope I did a little. Narcotic
Constipation Syndrome is no joke, even if my wife shows everyone my
abdominal x-ray and tells everyone in ear shot "my husband is full of shit.
You want to see the picture?" : )
Also if you do some research on this group on google for FAQ's you'll find a
bunch of stupid ravings but you should come across an FAQ that will tell you
about narcotic constipation and has a recipe for a homemade laxative, lots
of fruit and senna tea (same stuff in senacott.) Never tried it, but it
sounds good if you like fruit.

My doc prescribed a lax called "Glycolax". It seems to work very well
without the awful gas pains, and other misery that comes with the usual
laxatives. It is taken prn and usually takes a day or two to work, but it
definately does work.
