Re: Tennis Elbow?

Greetings,

I am a Hairy Beast of 59 years. Aside from pain sources generally
unrelated to this query, I'm in moderately good health.

Just in the last 2 weeks, I've developed serious pain in my
right arm, mostly concentrated at the elbow. No previous
problems with either arm.

It seems to fit the symptoms of Tennis Elbow. For instance,
if I extend my arm all the way and grip tightly, it hurts
plenty, at the elbow and mostly on the forearm side. Of
course, I never played tennis or any similar sport (save
maybe 15 min. when I was 14). I'm semi-retired and haven't
been aware of performing any repetitive motions to excess
with my arms. Do spend a fair amount of time at the pc, 'tho.

Does it sound like Tennis Elbow? Is there any semi-definitive
test?

Options for treatment? Exercises (which)?

Any/all advice, etc much appreciated.

Skoal,
Puddin'

Whether it's tennis elbow or not, it's clear you have a repetitive
stress injury (RSI) from using your computer. Apply cold packs and
modify your workstation.

Well, given the facts presented, I s'pose it's logical to
conclude RSI. I doubt it'd tell 100% of the story. The
left arm seems fine. Guess I need an X-ray (Gawd, I hate
ortho's).

The problem is not pain when I could be applying a cold pack.
The problem is functionality, i.e. it hurts to brush my
floggin' teeth.

Time to comtemplate ambidextrousness (sp?) ...

If I am not mistaken, tennis elbow or any repetitive type injury will
not show up as well on an x-ray as on an MRI. A nerve conduction
study will also help on this. I had my tennis elbow from bowling. As
long as I don't make the motion of reaching back and preparing to
bowl, my elbow behaves itself. I say elbow, but it's more on the
front of the arm like you described.

I agree that you need to study your workstation setup. There are a
lot of pages on the Internet that will give some advice on setups to
avoid that type of injury. I've been on CAD and other computer work
for years. I do use a wrist support for my mousem, and one for the
keyboard if I am going to do a lot of text.

Good Luck

Your mousing hand/arm would be the one getting the most work and you may
be holding it at an awkward angle as well.

I get pain in my elbow sometimes too; in addition to my wrist.

Yeah, an MRI is almost always going to be more useful. But
they're expensive, and if it's just another bone-spur thingness
(I have many) or somesuch which is untreatable ...

OK. Only on one arm and it primarily hurts only in the
bowling position. Sounds like a "Classic" case of RSI.

I guess I shoulda run beau-coup pain tests and reported
in my query:

There are all kinds of positions in which my rt. arm hurts.
There are quite a few in which it doesn't hurt.
Hurts plenty when I reach around behind my back.
Hurts plenty when I lift anything over 1 pound or so.
Hurts if I extend arm full and horoz. and make a fist.
It doesn't hurt when I masturbate the silly-goose 'puter rodent.
Doesn't hurt to type a little at the keyboard, either.

I'm thinkin' just a result of age/wear-and-tear. But I'll
keep an eye out for evidence to the contrary.

Thanks, Loujean. Your info was helpful.

....there are many different conditions that cause
elbow pain . Being a former golf addict I know
how lousy it feels . Check this link for the most
common causes of elbow pain .
