I went over my notes and talked with my husband after posting last
night - the neuro said the stroke was mild and under 8 hours, not
seconds, because the damage to my hand was progressing so well. He
said it is wasn't unusual to have one while sleeping as I pressed him
that my hand was messed up upon wakening - so I got it mixed up. He
was so hard to understand throwing around medical jargon that I
couldn't even spell to google it when I got home. At least no mention
of surgery came up. I know I'll understand much better what happened
after I see my GP and *he* explains. I'm also considering a second
opinion - is a neurologist the right specialist to see?

More tests are planned, another mri and cat and also the body scan.
Other too that I didn't quite understand my head was spinning so.
Hubby was no help - he planned to be the rational, note-taking,
question asking partner but fell into anxious silence.

With my family history, should my daughter be discussing this with her
ob/gyn since she has been on BBC to stabilize her monthly cycle since
she was 16? She's married now

With regard to the Topamax, I agree it is a dangerous drug. I must
take some culpability for letting things get out of hand. I had been
warned about the finger tingles and some other side effects - the red
flags were there but I dismissed them because I was under a great deal
of stress at the time and blamed that. My GP was none too pleased
about that. Always a silver lining though - had to get new clothes ,
though I do NOT recommend Topamax as a weight loss alternative.

Thank you again, and if you have any more info that you think might be
useful for my appointment on Thursday I'd love to know. I'm at
scarlet-tanager@hotmail.com if you'd rather not discuss it here - I
have some issues with it that I don't feel comfortable opening up in
public about it.

Bless you bunches!

interesting question?? since we don't know WHY you had clots...hard to
extrapolate to her...
if she smokes...NO BBC EVER..

actually it is common feeling that BBC increase the risk of
clots..PERIOD...tho for most the benefits outweigh the risks...esp now with
the very low dose estrogen or progestin only pills..

again...if she smokes...NO BBC

I did NOT say it was dangerous!! For many it is great...and many are not
bothered by side effects..

Is it because of the estrogen?
|
|again...if she smokes...NO BCP

Never has smoked - thank goodness

You are correct, you did NOT say it was, in fact for many it is a
godsend , that is what I meant by saying my personal problems with it
were rare - the drug induced anorexia, swelling of the tongue, etc.
Those are listed under the less than 1% of those that take it. I must
emphasize - I took it for migraine prevention and for *that* it most
definitely worked. As I said, I hold some of the responsibility for
letting it get out of hand. Had I not missed the red flags by
attributing them to stress and had seen the doctor I would have been
taken off it much sooner, when I was still at a lower dose and getting
it out of my brain would not have been so horrible. I must admit too
that I really, really wanted it to work... It's one of those common
sense things. Patients do have a responsibility to read up and
question and know what it is they are taking, and what to look out
for. In my case, my doctor could not possibly have known that my side
effects would have happened. He DID tell me of the most common ones
and also said most of them could be addressed by tweaking the dose.
So, some of this is just me being an idiot By now I certainly
should have known better. For me it was dangerous, but as we all know,
with any drug, YMMV. I wouldn't want someone to skip trying it for
migraines just because of my experience. Just as I wouldn't want
someone to dismiss Elavil or any of the drugs in its class just
because it caused neutropenia in me.

Thanks again Hawki
