It is not right to send a doctor to prison for treating serious
chronic pain. Dr. William Hurwitz had a practice that specialized in
pain management. He helped hundreds of people who tried every thing.
He did something that many doctors are afraid to do—he
prescribed opioid medications in doses that were high enough to bring
relief. His patients know he is a serious, conscientious and
compassionate physician.

Starting on November 3, 2004, Dr. Hurwitz will go on trial in the
federal court house in Alexandria, Virginia. The DEA wants a jury to
believe that he is effectively a drug pusher, not a doctor trying to
improve his patients’ lives. If convicted, he faces a lifetime
in prison. The prosecutors have done every thing they can to tip the
scales. They tried to prevent his patients from testifying. They have
tried to muddy the waters by picking at his medical judgments. They
want the jury to believe that the fact that a few patients lied to Dr.
Hurwitz and sold their medicines shows that Dr. Hurwitz somehow was
involved in their drug trafficking.

Dr. Hurwitz is not the first doctor that the DEA has gone after. This
time, they have gone too far. Dr. Hurwitz is a respected physician to
whom other doctors sent the patients they couldn’t help.

You can help. It will be a long hard trial. It will benefit the
defense if supporters of pain management who want the DEA to get out
of the business of regulating medicine come to the trial. Listen, form
your own conclusions and help us stop this travesty. Come to the
trial. Call 202-361-8110 for more information or email

Thanks for letting us know what's going on with Dr. Hurwitz.

This case may well have a huge ripple effect for all of us, so it
behooves us to help if that is the decision one makes after
reading the facts.

Dear Painlaw,

This is amazing and a travesty of justice. I live about 20minutes outside
where Dr Hurwitz practiced and when he was arrested there was so much media
hype, you couldn't turn around without seeing something about his arrest.
They compared the man to a crack dealer in the Washington Post and other
area media.
Now that the man is on trial for his life, not a word has been heard about
his trial. Total silence. I guess they don't want the public to know what's
going on until it's too late. If his arrest was such a big deal, why not
the trial? The DEA and Virginia authorities have all the resources of the
Government behind them to use in crucifying this man. Why do they have to
stack the deck? If it's such a good thing they've done, why are they hiding
it from the public?

The DEA is just a petty government agency that we could do without.
Responsible adults can choose their own medicines, and as for those who
sell to children or the incapaccitated, these can be taken care of on a
local level.

It's ironic that the government gives the power of the prescription pad to
doctors, then blame them when arbitrary "overprecription" takes place. If
doctors can't be trusted, who can? The DEA, with no medical training?
I'd give this power to the patients themselves, provided they prove that
they are capable, either by consulting a doctor or quoting from the PDA,
or other responsible literature. But so many believe that the power
should be held elsewhere, but if they routtinely prosecute doctors, then
who?

Good question OG. The first time, network TV was at the trial.
Special interest "news shows" showed patients on stretchers,
crutches, and in wheelchairs there to testify and support
Dr. Hurwitz.

It's not as if the escapades of Kobe Bryant are more important.
This country sees what networks with political agendas WANT
them to see in many cases.

It's especially disturbing to hear that you live nearby and even
newspapers aren't covering it.

Another thing og....the DEA took down their FAQ right about the time they found
out Dr. Hurwitz was going to use it in his defense. Nice huh????? NOT
!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm posting this website again showing the list of doctors arrested. It's
astonishing!
