I don't have any clinical info on Duragesic, but my opinion is that it's
sad when someone in an influential position disregards some relevant
realities about their area of influence, such as the fact that different
folks react differently to different meds. But you've got to tell her
the truth anyway, right?
My pain doc also thinks Duragesic is a "wonder drug," but he was
entirely ready for me to tell him it wasn't working for me. Happily, it
works very well for me (if I could just find the right dose!).
I hope you get the info you need and that it is shared in this forum
(I'm interested too).
Best,
Michael

I've been using the Duragesic patches for almost 4 years and have none of the
side effects you are talking about. Perhaps it's just too strong for you.
If I were you, I'd ask my doctor for something not quite so strong. You are a
detriment not only to yourself, but others when you drive and fall asleep at
the wheel. Also, your girls need their Mom to be a functioning Mom, not a
zomby. Talk to your doctor....the sooner the better.

Do you change your patch every 3 days or every 2 days Michael? I have been
changing my patch every 2 days for about 2 and half years. It works wonders
that way. That 3rd day became terrible. I wonder if that would be helpful for
you. I know alot of people change every 48 hours and have found that to be a
much better dosing schedule, rather than the 72 hours.
Something you might want to discuss with your doctor.

Zowee! Just agreeing with Sue here Lori Lynn!
You didn't mention what strength he has you on..perhaps there's a
lower dose he hasn't tried?
Barring that..as Sue said, there are many, many meds that are not so
strong and will not imperil you or your children!
This should be one
of the first questions your doctor asks you on a visit - is whether
the medication is having bad side effects and interfering with
your functioning. If he refuses to budge, I hope you are free
to find another doctor? This one sounds dangerous!
Good luck,

Hi Blue,
Yes, they put me on a 48-hour change schedule right from the start. They
showed me the graph on how rough it gets in that last 24 hours under the
recommended 72-hour dosage schedule, wrote 48 hours right there on the
Rx, and said the only problem I might have with 48 hours could be my
insurance company. But they haven't said a thing. It is very smooth,
which I greatly appreciate. I'm pretty convinced my dose just isn't high
enough yet to sustain me for the year kind of period others have talked
about.
I'm calling the clinic today.
Thanks for caring. :-)

Out of curiosity, Blue, what is your dosage history on the patch over
the last 4 years? They started me at 50 mcg/hr and after two weeks,
bumped me to 75. I think I need 100 or more, but willing to go up 25 at
a time until I find what works longer than one or two weeks.
Thanks,

I started on the 50's with 8-10 pills 5mgs of Oxycodone for break through pain
each day. After about 2 months went to the 75's and then again about 2 months
later went to the 100's and have been there ever since. I really think using
break through meds helps tremendously. I use mine every day.
Also the Neurontin 2700mgs daily and an anti depressant and have tried about
every sleep aid on the market, plus the other old anti depressants they use to
help induce sleep. I also us Baclofen 10mg, 2 pills up to 4 times a day. They
help tremendously!!! It took them a while to become effective, but when they
did, I noticed a great difference in my back spasms, I mean a great difference.
I've known people who have used up to 6 of the 100ugh patches to bring them
enough pain relief to function. You may be one of those who needs a really
high dosage. Hopefully your doctor will be agressive enough to bring you the
relief you need, no matter the dose.
Hope this helps.....

Brent,
Sounds like you are suffering from a syndrome called opiod induced
narcolepsy. It is common in those of us on strong pain medication.
There are medications to treat this condition and they will give you your
life back. Please talk with your doctor ASAP. In the mean time, do not
drive while drowsy.
