Author Distension?

Can someone tell me, once and for all, whether "distension" is an
accepted spelling? In both my Dorland's and Webster's, all I find is
"distention", which is how I've always spelled it. Am I just antiquated
or something?

I researched this once and what I found was that both are acceptable but
"distention" is the preferred spelling.

Distention is **the old** only acceptable spelling. Distension USED TO BE
ABSOLUTELY WRONG, BUT as times changed, many people did not want to look it
up or could not remember, so distension is acceptable (groan--as Gisele
would say...the "dumbing down" of our educational system and accepting it as
such).

I wonder if this means I don't have to change it in voice recognition
reports. Search and replace isn't a big deal, but it IS an extra step!

Seems like if VR is spelling it that way, someone put it in that way on
their end. I guess if I were doing that and there were other words
always misspelled same way, I'd just make one big find and replace
macro and run it on all documents right off the bat, like if it was
putting tendonitis over preferred tendinitis, disc instead of disk, etc

"Facette" has been driving me crazy for quite a while. I guess I
complained loudly enough about it, though; today I notice for the first
time that it's being spelled right.
