I didn't think we were talking paramedics, though, but that is interesting.
Around here, on certian calls we would have to wait until the police got
there before we could get out of the EMS to go help the victim. A lot of
firefighters around here are volunteer and they are trained at the minimal
first responder level but know how to put out a fire. They have no
authority over anything and aren't even at the fire stations. Even the
county fire departments are not very helpful in the event of an emergency
as, when I took my friend there in near anaphylactic shock, I had to beat
on the doors for 10-15 minutes before anyone came down - they were doing
something upstairs and couldn't hear us. They lock those places up tight
even during the day for their own protection and to help keep their stuff
from getting stolen. I knew that they had some emergency supplies at that
particular station because it also housed an EMS and I had been there
before while training. They told me I should've just taken her to the
hospital as the EMS was out and they couldn't use any of the stuff to help
her.
