| Don Adams dead at 82.
I remember laughing about the "cone of silence" when I was a kid.

| I remember him more from being a cartoon-self on Scooby-Doo when I was a
kid. How sad.

| I saw it on NBC Nightly News so NBC.com should have something on it. Or go
to Google news and type in his name.

Why is it sad?
People don't live forever, and 82 is a pretty ripe old age.
This is someone who helped several generations of people laugh, and left
happy memories.

| Duh, plus I loved his Maxwell Smart. It was before my time, but I have seen
every episode on Nick and Nite.

Where did you hear that he passed away? I can't find anything about it.

| Well, I'm of a mind that any death is sad. I'm still sad my son is gone too,
I can't help it. I can celebrate their lives and know they aren't here
suffering, but that doesn't make it any less sad to know that someone isn't
around anymore. And I really don't think there was any reason to explain why
someone would be sad at a death.

Well, now that you have explained what you believe, even though you think
there was no reason to do so, I understand your viewpoint.
I guess the reason I asked was that I don't see every death as sad, and so
your comment struck me as unusual.

But that is the death of a child, and certainly that's different. But
really, to say you are sad over someone being dead is pretty much the
same as being sad that they were alive, because the death is the end
for all of us. I was saddened to read that Don Adams broke his hip
last year and never really recovered from that, because his last months
were probably pretty tedious dealing with that, but he did have a long
and productive life (I was particularly interested to read about his
experiences in WWII), so his death per se does not sadden me.

| I think perhaps the sadness comes from our not having them in our
immediate lives rather than their death is sad. I've had family members
die at an early age, and while I miss them and think of them all the
time, it isn't just the good things they missed in life, but the bad
things too.
My brother died young and we will never know what good things life would
have held for him, but I do know he won't have a cheating spouse or
divorce or a custody battle over his children; he will never have money
problems nor have to file bankruptcy and lose a house; he will never be
stalked and fear for his life; his children will never be drug addicts,
rapists, or murderers; he'll never see his house destroyed and his
family's bodies floating in flood waters; he didn't have to see his
mother and sister die from cancer; he will never be in automobile
accident that paralyzes him for life; and he will die from asphyxiation
because his lungs quit working. For those things, I am grateful.

Did you leave out a word there or did I miss something?

| left out the word "not". That's what happens when I don't proofread
first. Thank you for catching that.

For sure. My stepfather died just as I was getting ready to enter
college. There is so much I would have liked to share with him that he
did not live to see, and that makes me sad, but he was a person who
really lived while he was alive, took chances, tried new things, and
though he left us too soon, I'm just happy to have known him when I
did.
