This is the second time this has happened to me. I have Microsoft
updates configured to automatically install. It installed an update
yesterday apparently and now Stedmans Spell Check doesn't work. I had
to use System Restore and undo the update which I know was supposedly
an important security update. Now what....do without Stedmans...no
way.... do without the security update???

Thanks
Barbara

Barbara,

I'm afraid you'll have to ask Stedmans if they have a patch for their
software or if anyone else has reported a problem with the MS update.

If you are using this machine for transcription, I would NEVER, EVER
use it to access the Internet with Internet Explorer.

I do have Stedmans, I do use Internet Explorer, I do have automatic updates
activated. Everything is working fine. There has been a lot of activity on
Updates and also my Norton's, and I have been very careful of where I have
gone the last few days in view of the problems being reported!

I too use the same computer for transcription and Internet. What a pain it
would be not to. I have been doing digital from home since November 1, 2000,
and not a single time have I had a crash, a problem, or anything else that
could be related to using the same computer for both.

I have a similar problem...well, sort of. My windows auto update
hasn't worked in almost a year and I haven't even been able to get the
service pack 2 update. Whenever I try to get it, it freezes up and
won't show that it is doing anything. I've even tried leaving it on
overnight to no avail. If I go to control panel and attempt to do an
automatic update, it also freezes. I have tried disabling my AV and
firewall in an attempt to see if they were the problem..nada..still the
same thing happens. Does anyone have any idea what is the problem or
how to fix it? My auto update won't even attempt to do a windows
update anymore and like I said above, trying to reset it just makes it
freeze. I have checked MS's website for help and can find nothing on
it.

HELP!
Please email me wtih any help/suggestions as I don't go on SMT very
often. Thanks! (jesusluvme@aol.com)

Yep. I had same problem on two of my computers, or basically same problem,
and here's what I got from Microsoft Help: (it's long, but I would print it
out and keep it for future reference)

This issue is most likely caused by corrupted Internet Explorer or Windows
Update cache folders; let's take the following steps to get the issue
resolved:

NOTE: If you are running Ad-aware, ZoneAlarm, PC-Cillin, Norton Antivirus,
Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, Sygate Personal
Firewall, Microsoft Personal Firewall, Proxomitron pop-up blocker, Ad
Muncher or a web accelerator, e.g. "Slipstream", I recommend you to
temporarily disabl
e or shut down any of these before accessing the Windows Update site. Be
sure to enable them again when you complete the update process. If you can
access the Windows Update site with these applications disabled, then you
may need to add the Windows Update site to the applications exception, or
the
do not block list. Please see the applications documentation on how to do
this.

Step 1: Reset Internet Explorer settings, and disable third-party Internet
Explorer plug-ins.
==========
1. Click Start, Run, type: inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
2. Select the General tab, and in the Temporary Internet files window, click
Delete Cookies, and click OK.
3. In the same tab click Delete Flies, check the "Delete all offline
contents" box and click OK.
4. Click "Clear History" and click Yes.

5. Click the Advanced tab.
6. Click the "Use HTTP 1.1" check box.
7. Click the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" check box.
8. Click OK to confirm the changes.

Then, we can open Internet Explorer, and click Tools-> Windows Update to
access the Windows Update site again. If the issue persists, we can refer to
the next suggestion.

Step 2: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.
===============
This behavior may occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been
corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please
be assured the folder will be created again when we visit the Windows Update
site again.

1. Click Start, click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press
Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window to start the
Automatic Updates service.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press Enter.

Note: Please ensure the Automatic Updates service is stopped before we try
to rename the folder.

2. Click Start, click Run, and type in "%windir%" (without quotations) and
press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, click Run, and type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press
Enter. Please run the command "net start WuAuServ" in the opened window to
restart the service Automatic Updates.

If the issue persists after we successfully rename the SoftwareDistribution
folder, some background programs are likely causing the issue. We can
prepare a Clean Boot environment, and then rename the SoftwareDistribution
folder again to get the issue resolved. To prepare a Clean Boot environment,
w
e can refer to the following steps:

Step 3: Prepare a Clean Boot environment.
=================
1. Click Start and Click Run, and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks) and click OK.
2. Under the Service tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then
click "Disable All" button. In this way, we can disable all the services
which belong to third-party programs.
3. Under the Startup tab, click "Disable All" button.

4. Click OK.
5. Choose Yes to restart the computer.
6. Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility
when Windows starts".

NOTE: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to
Normal Mode after we resolve this issue.

After that, we can refer to "Step 2" to rename the SoftwareDistribution
folder again.

After we perform the above steps, please visit the Windows Update site again
and see if the issue is resolved.

Thanks Dani. I'll try to follow those directions and see if it lets me
update.
