Has anyone had experience with both Comcast and DSL cable? It seems
every good thunderstorm we get Comcast internet goes out...but not the
cable for the TV. I was wondering if the same problem happens
frequently with DSL from the phone company.
Thanks

| I can't speak for Comcast, but I've had DSL for a little over a year
now. I think my DSL was down once for a couple of hours during that
time, but that's been it. My phones have never gone out during the 3
years I've lived here, though. I'm sure you lose DSL if you lose phone
service, so if you live in a place where the phone goes out if someone
spits on the sidewalk (BTDT), it would probably be kind of iffy.

| This is my first time with DSL, have had it for a year, and I think
it's much more reliable than the cable internet we had in 3 other
locations all around the country. No *after school lets out*
slow-down, either, which is a nice change. I have only had service go
down once in the year we've had it, and that was from a cut cable, I
think.

| I have had problems with Comcast lately storms or no storms. Slow as sin
and then it stops and then starts.
I am very annoyed with them and can't say anything good about them right
now.

I've had DSL through Earthlink (who subcontracts from Verizon) for several
years. It has only been down a few times in all these years, and the
support has been OK, although they will not provide support for wireless
network setups that you don't buy from them.
I just installed Comcast cable (internet) for my mom, and I have been really
impressed with it. The download speed is about 5 times faster than my DSL.
It has also been very stable, and the tech support is wonderful. There is
actually a local person she can call who has been very patient with her,
which is no mean feat, let me tell you.
I think when my contract with Earthlink expires, I'm going to switch to
Comcast cable access. I may also switch back to their TV cable (it's
digital now) from my Dish satellite, if they offer me a good enough package
deal. They include a digital TIVO style recorder with their TV cable, which
is another attraction.

| This is a real touchy topic with me right now. I use cable. its
cableone though...not comcast. I lost 16 days of service in June due
to faulty wiring. But it was not cableone's fault. Turns out the apt.
complex I live in is in contract with another media co. and they would
not allow cableone technicians on the property without them. Funny
thing about this media co. They provide broadband cable service but
the service actually has to come from the cableone network..even though
the initial wiring was done by this other media co..and done wrong I
might add. Plus, they only make service calls twice a week and you
simply cannot get next day service. Invariably, the two techs from the
different cos. could not get their schedules coordinated...that's what
took so long...that and me threatening a lawsuit for lost work and/or
if I lost my contract over it. The next day the cableone service techs
were out to the property without the media co. and they got it fixed.
So far, so good. Before I moved here I never had a problem with the
cable. It works really fast and stays connected...have never been down
due to storms, even during hurricane season. Fortunately no bad ones
here. I did use DSL initially and had nothing but trouble. Same thing,
bad wiring. The phone co. had to come out and rewire all the phone
jacks in my apt. due to what they termed *pinging out*. They assured
me this would solve the problem...since I had to pay the expense for
the rewiring. It did not solve the problem. If anyone is thinking of
using DSL, just make sure you contact the phone co. ahead of time to
see if there is a wiring problem. If there is, look out.

| My hospital just switched us all over to DSL from ISDN lines.
Actually, some of us on DSL and some on Comcast cable. I love my DSL.
We also have DSL on our "home" computer. My supervisor said she has
had a much more difficult time dealing with Comcast during this
transition rather than with the Bellsouth DSL people.

Sorry, I cannot say anything good at all about Comcast. I hope to never have
to use them again. Poor technical support, internet goes out at a drop of a
hat, slows way down after school and after 5 o'clock. I have wideopenwest
and cannot say enough *good* things about them. I have no experience with
DSL as they are not in my area.

| I take back what I said. They're having email problems today, (not a
good day for this). Ugh.

| I've never really had an issue with Comcast, which is odd because I
HATED them as a teevee provider (even after a massive fiber optic
upgrade, I was losing my service for 1/2 to 2 hours a day). My son had
DSL--which should've been faster than cable--and was astounded at how
much better cable is. (Theoretically, I think DSL is supposed to be
faster, without the bogdowns during times of heavy usage. Perhaps it's
because they've tiered DSL so only the most expensive deal gets you that
maximum, and the lowly basic subscriber gets crap.) For those of you
with lousy connectivity, it might do you some good to scream and demand
to have a fresh drop to your house; those lines do tend to deteriorate
over time, and when I got a new line run from the pole, even the
installer was amazed that it tripled my signal.
I've also had great luck with their tech support, so not sure why that
would be a problem.
OT: (I swear, someone mentioned their satellite going out when it rains.
.. .) You can get a funky little rain shield to mount on the top edge of
your dish that prevents most rain fade. Even living in FL, I rarely lose
my DirecTV signal.

| Also in Florida where in the summer we get frequent thunderstorms, and I
rarely lose my Direct TV either. It has to really get black, and we don't
have the shield you mention--didn't know about it. I have DSL though,
through a private company, premium price, but after dealing with BellSouth
for nearly two years it is worth every penny to be with the company I am
with (Snappy DSL--a small local company with superior tech support).

| Ooo, I didn't know about this! During all the hurricanes last year, we
rarely lost our signal (until the power went out, that is). My parents
lose their cable signal constantly - even in good weather. We have yet
to have any kind of major outage with DirecTV. Very good customer
service as well.
