Author Update on my friend's baby
Sandi

2005-06-20, 5:49 pm

I posted a couple of weeks ago about my friend's baby, born prematurely at
34 weeks. I just found out that she's going home tomorrow! After an
initial expected weight loss, she is back up to 4 pounds 11 ounces and is
eating all of her feeds from a bottle, so the parents are going to spend the
night in the "parenting room" at the NICU tonight, and then she will be
released tomorrow if all goes well. No respiratory, hearing, or vision
problems - she is a perfect, though tiny, little girl.

Thanks to everyone for their prayers and good wishes.

That's amazing! I'm glad she's doing so well.

She'll grow up to be one tough little cookie I'm sure.

That's great to hear. She must have amazing parents too because there
is no way I could have managed a baby that little.

Regina had to learn how to feed her today - apparently there's a trick to
it, keeping her sitting up and looking at you while she eats. Regina is
blind AND has tiny hands, and she said it was quite the feat to do it
correctly.

She's still having quite a bit of pain and some minor problems with her
incision, and the almost-an-hour drive to the hospital every day couldn't
have been easy on her. Plus, she was trying to work a couple of hours a day
within a day or two of going home! Transcriptionists - will we ever learn?

I guess we never will. It must take a "special kind" of dedication to be a
transcriptionist - either that or a special kind of crazy. I had Becker on
Monday, came home Tuesday afternoon and was back working Wednesday morning.

I'm so happy baby is coming home. Hope she slows down then from work. She
will certainly be busier! Good luck to her and her tough little girl!

That is absolutely wonderful news, Sandi! She will probably always be
her parents' miracle baby. Have you seen her yet?

Sandi that is such great news. Babies are amazing. My niece who was born
12 weeks premie is now 9 months - standing, crawling, interacting. It is so
cool watching them develop. I hope your friend is doing well also and that
she gets some rest.

Oh, yeah, I've been in the NICU a lot, but I haven't got to hold her because
you can only hold them for 30 minutes a day (something about using all their
energy) and I didn't want to horn in on Mommy and Daddy's time. You can
bet I'll be holding her now, though!

Wow, all the special care that goes with preemies! I never would have
guessed about the limited holding time. For some reason, I thought they
would need to be held MORE than a full-term baby, although the extra
stimulation and depletion of their energy makes sense too. I bet she's
precious!

The restriction was only while she was in the hospital, so that she could
expend all of her calories gaining weight. It made me sad to see her lying
there with no one holding her, but she didn't seem to mind, just basically
slept until it was time to eat anyway.

And now, the restriction is gone, gone, gone! Wheeeeee!

When my friend's baby was in the NICU, that was the absolutely quietest
place I had ever been. They didn't want you to smile at them too much,
touch them, hold them very much, etc. so they could use all their energy
at growing and "finishing". That about drove us nuts but once they let him
out of the NICU, we got in all of our snuggling and holding!
