| Meghan has planned her whole color theme of her wedding around the sterling
rose - a sort of lavender rose. The lady she was going to order them from
told her tonight that she can get her any rose EXCEPT anything lavender. She
says they do not ship well, and she can't guarantee that they will arrive
undamaged. She's bawling... and I'm trying to find solutions. Any rose
experts out there? Any suggestions? We will get some "second opinions"
tomorrow by calling other flower shops. I think at this point we'll do just
about anything to get about 6-7 dozen sterling roses here on July 30th.

I don't know how close in color their "Blue Bird" lilac lavender rose would
come in color to your daughter's Sterling rose, which I seem to recall is a
very pale silvery lavender, but you can ask for a sample. Any shade of
lavender in roses is rather scarce and hard to come by. She might consider
white or ivory roses mixed with some other flowers for the lavender shades.
I used this source for roses and some other flowers for my mother's funeral,
which collided with Valentine's Day in February 2002, making roses hard to
come by and rather expensive. They were beautiful, impeccably fresh,
delivered exactly on the day promised, and opened to perfection for the
funeral.
Perhaps if they can't help, they might know a source that could.

explains the scarcity and the reluctance of your florist to promise them for

Most of the florist roses these days are coming from South America, and Blue
Bird seems to be the lavender of choice there. I found two pictures showing
very different color, which is par for the course for pictures of lavender
anything. You would definitely need to get a sample flower, but they do seem
better suited to commercial use than the Sterling and more likely to be
available. At least one of the pictures shows a very similar color, so it is
worth checking out. \

If all else fails, other flowers can be found in the right color to look
well with the bridesmaid dresses, etc., and marriage is all about compromise
anyway; might as well start learning with the wedding :-).

cream or ivory rose, which might do. She'll just have to go to plan B!

Quite a few years ago we saw a display of wooden roses that were
absolutely gorgeous. They looked real. They are made of wood, but not
carved wood. The ones we saw were made of fine slivers of wood, each
formed/shaped into a rose petal and grouped, of course, to make an
individual flower. Apparently, wood flowers can be any color.
Dried roses can also be quite beautiful. Scents can be added to any
kind of artificial or dried flower bouquet.
Here's a few links to wooden roses. They aren't the same high quality I
remember, but it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

I had real but I got married in September (I guess not a lot of demand
at that time of year), and once the fancy-dancy-expensive florist blew
me off for the third time (and she was far away, too), I went to the
grocery store's floral department and they did a bang-up job. The
bright orange roses were a little more dicey to get, but it turned out
to be no problem.

| We went to a wedding recently that had been planned on fairly short
notice. They had three layers of cake, but not stacked one on top of
each other, just on separate tiers. She got it at Shaw's, the grocery
store. Just bought her own stands and saved a fortune. My first wedding
my ex's cousin's wife made the cake and it travelled safely from Maine
to Maryland in the back of a pickup. Second wedding my DH's sister made
the cake. Both were lovely.

| LOL. Perhaps we do have something in common. Well, I didn't get married
in judge's office, but neither time did we do anything on anywhere near
the usual scale. My daughter knows if she wants a big wedding she can
call her Aunt who is into all that stuff.

| As long as we're talking about weddings...my daughter thinks that I and
the groom's mother should wear white or cream? Isn't that going
against the rules?
I would prefer a rule that says I have to wear a more slimming color...
<G>
Seriously though, I thought the only one to wear white or cream was the
bride? My lack of knowledge of weddings is showing, I know.
I got married in the judge's office once, and in the Excalibur Hotel
the second time (nice chapel, but just the two of us). I was so
relieved to see there were no medieval guys in metal joisting suits at
the altar (and Elvis didn't show up until we got the pictures
developed!).
| |
| djgordon 2005-04-25, 11:47 am |
| My mother and soon to be MIL at the time wore silver as to match one of my
colors. Royal blue and silver were my colors and the bridesmaids wore the
blue carrying silver roses and the grooms wore tuxes with silver cumberbunds
with royal blue flowers, so the two maternal parents wore silver and so the
whole ensemble of the wedding party set each other off. Of course, being my
second marriage, I wore antique and not white. The only person dressed to
match me, color-wise, was my daughter.

| No one but the bride is supposed to wear white or cream, if you are
following someone's "rules". If not, wear whatever you want. Who cares?
I would prefer to wear black, since that is the most slimming (and elegant,
I think), but I hardly think it would be appropriate, since it is
traditionally the color of mourning. :-)

| When our son got married, the bride's mother planned to wear ivory, the
bride was wearing white, the bridesmaids were wearing a dark burgundy,
and the guys were wearing black tuxes. Now, this was mid October. I
told the bride, I would prefer to wear dark, how about black. She said
okay, we could do the "the good guys/ bad guys" idea, being funny.
There was no way I was wearing beige. Her mother putzed around on
finding a dress. I chose a medium to quartz gray color. Her mother
finally chose a dark beige and the top of the dress was multicolored
that actually had gold and gray in it.
We've known many mothers who wore black, even weddings where the entire
wedding party wore black.
I personally think the mothers should complement the colors worn by the
bridesmaids.
Tell your daughter that you prefer a different color. First of all,
white and creams make people look really washed out. A pretty color
fabric is becoming on most people. Take her with you to a bridal shop
and the people there will explain to her why mothers don't look good in
white/creams, depending on your shape, hair color, age, etc.
Good luck and have fun! Brenda

| I've been to several "black and white" weddings, the most recent on 12/31
when even the guests were requested to wear black or white! When my
daughter married in 8/98 the bridesmaids all wore black, but that was
because the dress they chose only came in black or pink. One of the girls
is big - 5'11", 200 lbs. - and said she'd feel like a giant pig in the pink
gown so they went with the black.
When I got married in 1964 my MIL wore white and I was really annoyed but
only 21 and not gutsy enough to say anything. <G>

| That's what they're doing, all wearing black except for the bride (not
sure about the groom). I'm putzing on the dress too because I"m losing
weight and want to continue the process - I have until this fall, so
hopefully it will continue. I told the groom's mother just to get what
she wants and I'll work around what she does.
Thanks everyone for the ideas/advice.

| Yes, black and white weddings are very elegant, but if that is not the
theme, I still think it inappropriate to wear black to a wedding, especialy
for one of the mothers.

| And the fakes don't dry up and die so you could keep your bouquet
forever basically, right?

| This may or may not help you:
http://www.freshroses.com/roses.html
