| I did my first really, really slow dictator yesterday, sounds like a
really nice older doctor, very clear and precise, very easy to
understand. I thought, Wow, this will be a piece of cake! I will whiz
through this work!!
Wrong!!!! It seemed like I slowed down to match his speed. He spelled
just about everything, even spelling "dough" three times in one report.
He gave all the punctuation, headings, and everything else.
One report on a new patient was 27 minutes long, another 23 minutes. It
took me all day to do 64 minutes of dictation! Of course, the four
'short' naps I took might have had something to do with the time it took.

Slow dictators slow me down and make me sleepy too! I make much better time
with speedy dictators, even allowing for pausing and backing up to relisten.

Haha! Can't you adjust the speed? I have experienced listening to such
a slow dictator also and it indeed tended to make me fall asleep. Then
I thought of increasing the playback rate and it solved the problem
(the increased PB rate had that effect of sparking my adrenaline as
well).

| Good idea. I'll do that next time.

| I have a couple of slow dictators and speed them up. Surprisingly one of
them has a very very heavy accent, and he is easier to understand on a
faster speed. I hesitated speeding him up, and was really surprised how
much better it went.

| That is true. If I have trouble understanding someone slowing down can make
it worse, however, speeding up does sometimes help!

Like some of the other folks, I crank up the speed. It really improves
the quality of one person's voice; makes the inaudible audible. Another
person dictates every single address although I have them all in Instant
Text and have already plugged that in, so while he's taking time doing
that (I still listen, of course), I can go check my e-mail or do
something else for a couple of seconds.

| SLow is one thing, but spelling everything is horrid! I once had a
psychiatrist client who was doing that to start. I told her please not
to do that. Being a bit anal I think it was kinda hard for her, but she
tried LOL

| I can't get my boss to remember to spell names, but he does persist in
dictating punctuation and capitalization in the most obvious places.
"... Defendant's - apostrophe S -car was..." or "... this Court -
capital C - to grant...". Drives me nuts, because by the time he
dictates the punctuation, I've already typed it.

| I had a cardiologist who was a great dictator except that he insisted
on dictating every comma. I told him it wasn't necessary and that he
could stop. He said he would, but it totally messed with his train of
thought and he became such a lousy dictator that I told him to go back
to dictating the commas! We both were much happier.
