For those of you (like me) who have not upgraded to XP for whatever
reason, defragging remains a time-consuming chore, especially if you
have a large hard drive. I've been playing with Diskeeper Lite and can
happily recommend it as an excellent way to defrag and noticeably
speed up your computer.

I should have noted a link, but no biggie--it's freeware and easy to
find on the major freeware sites. Since even EndItAll doesn't kill all
running processes, defragging sometimes even has to be done in Safe
Mode if you're hosed up, but not so with Diskeeper Lite.

Anyone else using it?

I had it on an old system and didn't like it, but honestly don't remember
why now.

I'm going to check into it, as I too have serious headaches with
defragging and consequently don't do it as often as I should. Thanks, Anne!

You're welcome! The interface is very different from Win98's resident
defrag, but don't be alarmed. Progress is monitored by a bar at the
bottom of the screen, and you can check your fragmentation level
before you decide whether to proceed. It's slick!

I found out that my computer had large problems when I tried to defrag
and it told me I didn't have enough memory. Pish-posh! I said. Then I
looked. My large drive was crammed full, with only a little white
sliver in that pie chart.

Thus began two murderously hateful days. I found out that for some
reason in my "local settings" I had 58,706 .tmp files. I don't know
why, but they wouldn't come out. I had to start out deleting them one
at a time, then two, then three, finally at the end of the process I
could delete 5000 or so at once.

It has been horrible. All caused from -- guess what? Switching to
AOL's security system instead of the stuff I was using before. Somehow
or other, I'd changed a number in there where it was saving all those
files.

I still have to fix it all, but I have the main problem corrected.

And then I forgot to defrag!

I almost forgot the important thing: My computer was so infected with
viruses, worms, and spyware that I couldn't even move around in there.
That took a LONG time to disinfect!

I still have my old Win 95 which I use from time to time. I use the
resident defrag for this machine. Since it takes a couple of hours, I
defrag before I go to bed and leave it on defrag mode and check it in
the morning.

I have WinXP Pro and use it most of the time. I use an excellent
software called "System Mechanic Professional v6.0" to keep my machine
in tip-top shape -->

It has practically everything you need to clean, debug, and maintain
your system. It is a commercial product, but it is worth every dollar,
and ultimately saves you time and money in the long run.

I love system mechanic. Every time I work on a new computer for someone, I
put the 30-day trial on their system and encourage them to buy it. Even for
the technology challenged, this program is a dream.

Becky,

Do you always go through AOL to get to websites? I wonder how you got
all the spyware and viruses.....I thought AOL's security system was
pretty much fool-proof. Please don't tell me I don't have to go back to
running all the other stuff too. Comcast has free security, virus scans,
etc but I don't use them because I have AOL's running and WIndows XP has
a firewall that I had to disable to allow AOL's new security system to
run properly. Now I don't know what to do...run Comcast stuff, AOL
stuff or just get my own. Help!!!

Sigh. I don't know just what went wrong. I do know that I decided to go
with McAfee first, because my Norton's expired. That was the beginning
of the end -- but don't blame AOL, because I'm sure it's something *I*
clicked on. I'm still investigating.

18 hours yesterday on this computer. 18 hours. Work was MONDO late.

I would heartily recommend you do your defrag in Safe Mode after
making that many changes, Becky. That is, if you have Win98--I don't
know enough about XP to make an intelligent recommendation! <G>

Defragging in Win95 won't take nearly as long if you reboot into Safe
Mode and do it that way.

I have XP, Anne. And it seems to have lived through everything. Knock

Good deal! Do you notice a real difference in performance now that the
puter has been cleaned up?That stuff can really slow you down!
