| Has anyone heard of this company out of Virginia? I got cold contacted
regarding a resume' I have had on Monster.com for ages, inviting me to be an
editor for the company, and this really couldn't come at a better time, but
I needed to know if anyone has heard of this company--good or bad--first:
Acetera,Inc.
http://www.acetera.com
4227 Lafayette Center Drive, Suite B,
Chantilly, Virginia 20151
Thanks for any insight!
Happy Holidays,

| From what their web site looks like, it looks like it's not
specifically a MT place but they do a whole buncha stuff *shudder* --
which sounds SUSPICIOUSLY like it's a front for an Indian operation, if
that matters to you.

| Well, their careers page asks for MTs from the US and says they have CLIENTS
throughout the US and Europe....sounds up and up to me. Carol, the worst you
can do is accept the position and if it either doesn't pan out or it's not
to your liking, it can be a lesson learned as long as you're out no money.
I'd definitely try it, especially if you feel it's a good time to do so.

Piggybacking my own post here. I went to this link and found a name I am
familiar with. If this is the same person, and I am not sure how familiar
that name is overseas, I would give this company a wide berth.
http://www.medical-

ile
I "knew" this person when I had the unfortunate circumstances of allowing
them to continue to do my transcription after a top notch US MT had left
their ranks and I still regret it to this day. I wouldn't sell my accounts
to this company either because I would not wish the quality of work I
received from their US and offshore MTs on my worst enemy. It was a
nightmare to say the least. I think it is odd that you mentioned they were
in Virginia when this website says Texas, however, if you click on the link
at the bottom of this page, it also says Virginia. The company I am
thinking of is also in Virginia. Acetera is on the AAMT page as a
Corporate Member, which makes me think that the person left the one company
or went to another or the one company got bought by the other or something.
Of course, all of this is speculation without digging further.

Piggybacking my own post again....I clicked on the link and then noticed
the website looked curiously like another company's website and a lot of
the information in the website looks just like the company (LanceSoft, Inc)
that I am referring to. So, I went to the LanceSoft website and it appears
that both Acetera and LanceSoft occupy the same office space/building
Corporate Office LanceSoft Inc.
4227 Lafayette Center Dr, Suite #B
Chantilly, VA 20151
Main Phone: 703-674-4500
Fax: 703-961-9940
Which is also one of the addresses listed for LanceSoft, Inc.
What I find funny is their website statements:
"Standard turnaround times are less than 24 hours, but STAT services and
faster TAT are provided. Unlike many other firms, your organization will
have the benefit of working with the same team of transcribers on an
ongoing basis. "
Oh, dear, I am really beginning to laugh my head off.
Honestly, if this company is one in the same or a part of LanceSoft, I
would run as quickly as your legs will take you and don't look back.

| I remember a bit about the Lancesoft deal a while back in a thread of yours,
Jeannie, but I don't understand why run from it (if indeed same corporation)
before giving anything a try. I mean, Carol as an editor may make a
difference in those documents that were not up to snuff. And to at least try
it and see if she gets paid on time and treated fairly, I don't see the
problem. I've hurt at times in the past six months with the slow work that I
would probably have taken the first thing offered, worked, saw how things
were going, and see if it was worth toughing it out if it wasn't an ideal
situation. I've run across some doozies in my time that I wouldn't send my
worst enemy to work for, but then again some of the coworkers I had at the
places saw it in a completely different way and liked it. It's all in the
eye of the beholder sometimes....as long as you're not paying to work and
you get paid on time and you feel good about what you're doing.

Yes, she could do them a wonderful job helping them out but I honestly
do not think (based on what they offered me) that she would get paid
enough to retype everything, get blamed when the work was late or bad, and
whatnot. If you saw what I saw, you would know why I was warning her. I
got stuff back from their editors (after one TOP NOTCH one left) that was
not _nearly_ client ready. I got stuff directly from their
transcriptionists that needed to be completely redone. Simple instructions
could not be followed and all I encountered was one finger pointing at
another person, blaming people who were not even there, etc. I wouldn't
wish that nightmare on anyone.

they are one of the best. Also, Vicki H. recently posted that JLG is
hiring. I don't know anything about JLG, but I think very highly of Vickie.
If I were you, I'd try one of these two companies and forget about Acetera.

| Carol A 2005-12-21, 12:56 am |
| They told me they paid 7-8 cents per line for transcription, and 2-3 cents
per line for editors. She was offering me a job as an editor.
Frankly, right now, I'd be lucky to get a job *anywhere*. But, still, I
can't afford to work for a place where the job is going to be short-lived,
as I can't afford any*more* short-lived jobs on my record.
I have Asperger syndrome paired with depression, and until just recently,
the depression had not been adequately treated and the Asperger syndrome had
not been diagnosed. Because of this, I never held a job longer than a year
and a half...including my last transcription job, which ended TWO DAYS after
I was finally starting to feel the positive effects of what would be
(FINALLY) the adequate treatment of my depression (a combination of hours of
sleep modification and of medication changes and redosing). That's been the
story of all my job losses: too little, too late. That actually is what
Asperger syndrome is all about : slow social development.
So, now, my psychiatrist and psychologist have recommended that I apply for
social security disability income, but...GOD, I don't want to do that.
I'm a transcriptionist, and a good one. I don't want to live with my parents
forever. My father is emotionally abusive, for one thing. When I had this
last job, I was going through a rough period. I had three non-suicidal
nervous breakdowns where I spent the entire day sleeping. The rest of my
days weren't much more productive.
But, two days before the doc's office manager called to say they had given
the job to someone else, I was doing better! In fact, when she called, I was
on a roll, in the middle of transcribing their stuff! Of course, after I got
the call, I immediately fell into a pit of despair again, as I had pretty
much pinned my last hopes on that job....
HELP!
Carol
p.s. I understand entirely why I was let go. I do not blame the doc or his
staff. They had a timeline to keep, and I was not meeting it.

| Thank you, Jeannie. I really appreciate the insight. Now is not a time I can
afford to make mistakes. I have already made several, and they have put my
parents and I in a very bad financial bind. (Yes, unfortunately, I have been
forced to go back to living with my parents, and the story gets worse from
there, so I won't bore you with it.) That is why I got excited when this
woman contacted me.
I shall reply to her e-mail and say, "Thanks, but no thanks. I understand
from other transcriptionists that not only is your company a less than
desirable one to work for, but it also hires transcriptionists outside the
USA (I assume that is why you are looking for editors for 2-3 cents a line,
which is actually a laughable wage for correcting transcription done by
people for whom English is a second language, as I have seen transcription
done by East Indians), which I refuse to support. "
Sound good?

Not to me. I would not say anything that you would not be happy having
to eat later. I would ask them if you would be editing the work of
overseas transcriptionists, and then when they said yes, politely
decline, stating that you do not care to edit the work of overseas
transcriptionists.
Trust me.

Just do whatever you feel is right for you. Like I said, you could
probably do a good job for that company but I am not sure "what you are up
to". I am not "up to" redoing work all day long and getting paid an editor
rate when I should be getting a transcription rate. All I can speak from
is my personal experience with LanceSoft and it appears that they are
sister-companies or whatnot. I received work back (after the top notch
editor left) that was so ridiculously wrong that it wasn't even funny.
Sad, really. They then put a US editor on the work and in all honesty, I
was FAR FROM IMPRESSED as simple formats were not followed (after days on
the work), there were still gross errors in the documents (medical errors
as well as English grammar errors), etc. It was really a nightmare for me.
What was so insulting is that I honestly tried to mentor them and help them
because I hate to see someone fail so miserably as I feel a bit responsible
for it like I have not tried to teach them well enough. Well, I eventually
came to the realiziation that apparently they did not care about the
quality and that all they wanted to do was get the words on paper and meet
the deadline (which they also failed miserably to do). I would not go to
work for them. There was mention of them buying my accounts and while it
would've been good for me to do financially, I honestly could not do that
to my accounts and look at myself in the mirror every day, not matter how
much money I was offered (we didn't even get that far).

good point, which I totally forgot to address in my first response. I
wouldn't burn any bridges, although I am fairly certain I burned one with
them by being so vocal about the quality of their work, their failing to
meet deadlines consistently, and their lack of ability to do anything about
it but I had to do what was best for my company, my accounts and my
subcontractors.

But Jeannie, that's a different issue. You weren't going to them
looking for work. They were going to you looking for work, and their
work was substandard. You were perfectly justified in pointing out
their deficiencies, as you were employing them, not them employing you.

Well, it was complicated because they wanted me to work for them once I
pointed out their lack of quality, etc. It was a complicated issue but I
was pretty firm in the fact that I would no longer give them any work,
would not work for them and would not sell them any of my accounts due to
their poor quality.

| I have started working for Acetera. I have been in training since Friday and
have now typed a total of two reports (one Friday night [had some technical
difficulties because I had contracted a worm, thought I'd gotten rid of it,
and then discovered I hadn't, yet, so told them I had to stop working for
them until I was sure I had a secure computer--ARRRGH!!!] and one today
[thick German accent lady]). So far, the people are very kind and extremely
flexible.
The only thing I am marginally disappointed about is they only have one tech
person to call about the software, and he is only available 9-5 EST, whereas
the last production co. I worked for had their guys on call via cellphone
for emergencies until 11 p.m., and there were two guys, so that each one
could have time off. But, each company you go to is going to have different
ways of doing things, so this is a very minor complaint on my part.
I like this company. They have their sh-tuff together. Now, my father is
quick to remind me that I should not be so quick with the rosy talk until I
receive my first paycheck, but...he is always quick to shoot me down
whenever I get excited about a new job. That's his way. Lack of pay or
timeliness of pay wasn't the complaint that Ms. Wilson had about them,
anyway.

Of course it wasn't - I didn't work for them. Their company subcontracted
