Segregation in LR.

I read this on KTHV's site this morning. I noted with amusement (after
what we'd been discussing here) how the head of construction had never
seen anything like this in his life. I actually could not imagine that
nobody had ever seen this, because it was everywhere when I was a
child:
"Construction crews remodeling an old five-and-dime store in downtown
Little Rock uncovered a relic found most often in museums and history
books; the words "WHITE" and "COLORED" were painted over the spots
where water fountains once hung.
Charles Moenning, the head of construction on a project to turn the old
S.H. Kress store into loft apartments and retail space, said he was
amazed at the discovery. The worker from Colorado said he had never
seen anything like that in his life, at least in person.
The black letters stand out from the beige plaster walls, recalling the
days when segregation ruled the South. Blacks and whites were kept apart
in schools, public transportation and accommodations."

| I imagine they'll paint it over, if they haven't already, but I think
it should stand as a monument to our past, to remind people and to
hopefully keep it from ever happening again.

Segregation was done away with before I was born and I never saw
anything like it but it's not like I would be incredulous if I were to
see some evidence of it. I mean, what are they thinking? It's like
people who think the holocaust didn't happen just because they didn't
see with their own eyes the millions of Jewish lying in mass graves.

BTW, did they happen to take photos so there would be proof to future
generations for those who attempt to rewrite history?

I can only hope so. I don't think people would allow themselves to be
run over in this day and age, and I think it's just (around here) the
old folks -- and my ex -- who would like to see things that way again.
I've never seen anything like him for a racist, and he's only 53, was
like that when we were going together and married, way back. I'd meet
him at the bowling alley for our league bowling and say "Who are we
bowling tonight?" and if it was the black team,he'd say "the n____s." I
told my mom today I would have long ago killed him in his sleep had we
stayed married.

Did I break some unwritten forum rule that requires I quote another
person's post? If I did I shall now ignore the button at the bottom
that just has POST REPLY and instead shall exclusively use the QUOTE
option only. I was pretty sure that it was obvious that I was
responding to the subject of the thread.

No one follows the rules around here, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It isn't a matter of whether it's a
rule. It's for clarity. Not everyone
receives their messages the same as you
and not everyone receives every message.

Exactly... different newsreaders have various options and some don't
display the message to which we reply. Due to some ISP issues, I've
temporarily switched from using Outhouse Express to posting via Google
Groups, and had to learn a lot of new methods.
Basically, though, the idea is to quote enough of the message to which
you're replying so that there's a context for the reply and so that
everyone will understand to whom you're replying and what they were
saying that generated the reply. It's also "best practice" to snip
material that's no longer relevant or that makes the post cumbersome to
read, but to leave attributions for any and all quoted material. It
makes for much simpler and clearer communication with fewer
misunderstandings.

Marsha,
I apologize, I was feeling particularly snippy that day and I should
not have been so sarcastic. Afterall, you did say please. I didn't
know that there were different avenues of access or even an inability
to see the thread in its entirety, so I hope you will accept my
apology.
