I wonder what his "qualifications" for being a Prince might be,
other than being born in the right family? His comments about the
offensiveness of people trying to "rise above their stations" smacks
of the elitism of Edwardian England. What a schmuck!

That was my first impression, Eliyahu, when I read this but also agree with him
that some people expect to get ahead without the proper training or experience.
His choice of words was a bit elitist, though.

I understand that he has had a lifetime of training to be a Prince and then a
King, if and when.

This goes against what I told my children when they were in grammar
school...that they should follow their aspirations and never, ever think
that they can't do what they'd like to do.
I agree with Eliyahu..he's a schmuck!

| I think Charles blew it big time. He's no intellectual giant is he? Only reason
he has the status he has is he was born into it - pretty much no way he could
muck it up - even with all his carrying on against protocol. I think it just
reinforces that the monarchy is out of touch with reality.

He'd have the "job" whether he got the training or not, and whether he
was capable of it or not. It's a sinecure based strictly on heredity and
says nothing about advancement based upon ability. And yet, from what I
see in the article, he would feel that someone from a "lower station" in
life mustn't aspire to do the same even with the same training. It's an
old European idea that one's place in life is limited by one's ancestry
and the circumstances of one's family. It goes along with "knowing your
place" and "respecting your betters". Quite the opposite of American
egalitarian ideals.

| Of course, if you think he's bad, you should read about his ancestors
and relatives... Karl Shaw's "Royal Babylon: The Alarming History of
European Royalty" will disabuse you of any notions you might have had
about the various kings and queens as rational, virtuous, or otherwise
admirable over the centuries. While we all know about the madness of
King George III, Shaw points out that he was the first British monarch
in many generations who wasn't universally despised by all of his
subjects. You can get an idea from sample pages at

Hopefully the younger royals will change that. Just was watching Dateline with
Prince Harry over in some African country. The horrible rumor is that if a man
has AIDS and has sex with a virgin he will be cured. Harry is seen holding one
of the victims, at the time 10 or so month old little girl who lost her uterus
over this. You could see it in her eyes. Next time he went back the child was
walking and doing better. Just breaks your heart. Hopefully this is not just a
put-on but truly trying to help those in need.

Even though many of our heads of state come from money, there is still the
chance for somone who was born w/o a silver spoon to become president.

Dang you, Eli...now I have to go to the library and I already haven't
finished painting my kid's room. *sigh* Maybe the wallpaper will wait
another couple of days.

Just off the top of my head, I think we can also include Truman,
Eisenhower, Nixon, Lincoln, Hoover, Jackson, Taylor, Andrew Johnson,
Grant, Garfield, McKinley, Reagan and Carter. OTOH, by the time you
run for national office, you'd better have money and lots of it.
Even Nader, despite the populist image he likes to project, is a
multi-millionaire.

It's worth it. You'll never look at kings and queens the same way
afterward. There's one who had a 100" waist, another who made his
soldiers march with steel rods strapped to their legs so that they'd
goose-step perfectly, and several whose ongoing sexual misadventures
make Clinton look like a Puritan preacher. There's also a recent
British queen who was a kleptomaniac, stealing trinkets from the
homes of her subjects when she visited them. The current royal
family is probably the most "normal" that they've ever had.

I may be wrong, but it seems like William and Harry are pretty decent kids in
spite of all they have been through.

I saw the special on him last night on ABC, I believe. I was amazed at how
much like his mother he is.

What a heart-wrenching story that was.

I know! I also sobbed like crazy when he was holding the child who had
been raped and told her story and oh...I gotta stop - feeling the urge to
cry again. Poor child!
