Am I nitpicking? I don't understand why national companies have a problem with
reimbursing for your internet service provider when you work at home. If an
employee works in the office, they don't have to pay for it.

Aha, but you just proved why by posting on this forum. Most companies will
reimburse for dedicated uses. If you were using the Internet just for your
work and absolutely nothing else, then they might be willing, but of course
you'd have to prove it, blah blah blah. Even the IRS does percentages, i.e.
portion of your house used as home office, computer has to be for work and
work only, etc.

I understand that - but, I was happy using AOL dial up for my own use, but was
required to get cable which is over twice as much a month.

Then they should be willing to pay the difference. If not and you're an IC,
you can take that as a business expense. If you're an employee, perhaps as an
unreimbursed employee expense.

My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely.

Are you an employee? You may be able to deduct some of this even as an
employee, but not straight off the top as an IC could. I can't imagine being
w/o high-speed. I "could" DL voice files w/o it, but it would take probalby 20
times longer (I can D/L a 30 or more minute voice file in probably less than
one minute).
