Author And you think nothing ever happens out in the country?

Shoot.

I was sitting here working away, when I heard what sounded exactly like
somebody driving a semi through the shop at about 70 MPH.

The shop is about 2 blocks (or what would be blocks) from the house, and can't
be seen from the yard. The shop was fine, so Herschel and I went for a walk to
the road, a little over 1/3 mile from the house. By that time I was sure I'd
imagined it, then I saw traffic slowing down.

The Schwann's truck had hit the bridge, flipped way up in the air and landed on
its noggin! There was food EVERYWHERE. The driver was standing there all dazed,
and the sheriff's deputies, the hook and ladder (can anybody tell me why they
send a hook and ladder? You have a heart attack, they send the hook and ladder.
You run in the ditch, they send the hook and ladder. You choke on a fishbone,
they send the hook and ladder - Your house catches on fire and they send the
yahoo from down the road in his pickup truck with the little red beacon proudly
going round and round, and then they call for the hook & ladder while your
house burns down).

Aunt Leona was out on her porch and she saw the whole thing. She said he caught
that bridge rail and FLEW in the air, rolled in the ditch and landed upright,
going the opposite direction. The driver had a cut on his head and didn't seem
to know what was what, but he seemed okay. The truck was just demolished.

Neighbor Joe hollered, "Hey Y'all, there's steaks on the ground over here! And
broccoli too!"

I told them just to go on home, I'd pick up after them. :-D

Becky,
You really do need to start writing down some of these stories. You
truly have a gift.

Plenty fodder for tales around here, Margie. I've hardly ever seen a Schwann's
truck, let alone a smushed one!

I'm glad the driver wasn't hurt! Usually when something like that happens
around here, everybody swoops in and takes all they can, since the food
can't be re-sold anyway. A few years ago a tractor-trailer load of green
beans flipped, and it was surprising how fast that mountain of green beans
disappeared!

Yeah, there I'd be. Standing there. Standing there. Standing there. If there
were one live person looking at me, I'd be standing there, tongue stuck to the
roof of my mouth!

That's because it has all the rescue and lifesaving equipment on
it -- everything from respirators to Jaws of Life. No room for all
that stuff on the pumpers.

It's also to have a safe backup incase something happens to the ambulance
that delays it. There is at least one EMS trained firefighter on the hook
and ladder here in Chicago.

Becky,

The driver must have been a wanna-be aerobatics pilot:-)

I'm glad he wasn't seriously hurt.
