We have those services here in Western NY -- some places where you drop off
(one inside a Kinko store) and another private store front and some pick up
upon prior arrangements. I think they charge 30% but THEY decide what they
will take to sell for you

Donna, are people actually getting consignments for e-bay from people who
are willing to give them 50% of the sale price, plus a fee? This just seems
bizarre to me. That's the sort of cut major auction houses used to take back
in the days when they were the only way to get something in front of a
number of likely buyers at an auction. I thought that kind of thing had gone
the way of the dodo bird when the ability to do-it-yourself and reach the
huge e-bay audience came along, though.

I'm just curious--I know nothing about this. Maybe there's a thriving
virtual auction house industry out there. I knew there were people offering
to sell on consignment for a fee to cover photos and listing, and some
newbie sellers were using them in the hopes listing through a major seller
with a good rating would get them more and better bids, but I just had no
idea that fees for that had gotten to the old auction house levels.

I'm working on that - it's real varied from the research I've done. I've
lowered my cut twice since the first iteration of the page. I'm also going
to try to keep everything as negotiable as possible. It takes a lot of
time to list things and keep track of them, do all the paperwork, file
taxes, blah blah blah. You're the second person to balk at the rates, so I
need to listen carefully. The other person was in Sante Fe (he may do this
as a regional option in his area). I'm up for suggestions.

Donna, I think it is a great service, especially since you have the skills.
People may use their computer but don't know diddly about uploading a picture,
making the product sound good, setting a fair price for the product, choosing
the category etc -- spelling -- do you just cringe at the misspellings on ebay?
I pay people to sell stuff for me -- when would I have the time?

I have gotten several bargains for my amethyst glass collection by misspelling
amethyst and finding stuff that was never bid on because no one saw the
listing...

My niece has been doing this for at least 5 years. She acts as the
go-between for about 10 antique stores in her area. Her fee is 25% of the
sale price with the store owners paying the eBay charges.
