My daughter and her fiance are going to NY tomorrow to try out for the
wedding-version of WWTBAM. We are country people. Going into the city is
an overwhelming thought. I was wondering if anyone from the area has any
suggestions for them as far as maybe driving to NJ somewhere and taking a
train into the city, etc? They are trying to avoid the huge cab fares, etc
and I've no advice at all to offer them?

Are they flying or driving? There are inexpensive bus services from all the
local airports to midtown Manhattan. If they are driving, they can look for
a garage in Newark/Hoboken and take the PATH trains into the city
http://www.nj.com/njtransit/path.html. There is also a very good grid of bus
service from various points in New Jersey to the Port Authority Bus Terminal
in midtown. http://www.njtransit.com/sf_bu.shtml (Actually, I think you can
travel the NJTA system all the way from Philadelphia into Manhattan if you
have the time to spend.) Once they are in Manhattan, both buses and subways
run frequently to just about anywhere you could want to go, and maps are
available. They can buy a weekly pass if they are staying a while, or a card
that will give them an extra free trip for every ten paid for
http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm ,
http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/bus/. For that matter, a lot of places are
within walking distance in Manhattan--just tell them to wear very
comfortable shoes. Cab fares can definitely be a real killer.

Bambi...Charlie works in NYC several days a month and has done so for the
last 30 years or so. He said that they could drive to Newark and park at a
cost of at least $15 per day. Then they'd take the PATH train into Penn
Station which will cost about $7 each, and then the subway into midtown (I
assume that's where they're going?) for about $2.00 each. He said if they
have any questions they can call him. E-mail me if you want his #.

Slightly off topic, but you did mention comfortable shoes...<G> Is
anyone else here a fan of Born shoes? They're expensive in department
stores (around $100), but very reasonable (brand new!) on Ebay. The
older styles have big toe boxes, some rounded, some sort of squared
off. They're all hand-sewn and last forever. If you remember Earth
Shoes from the late 60's, you get the idea--some of the older styles
are much like that. They're so blessedly comfortable that you feel
like you're wearing your favorite old slippers.

I've never heard of Born shoes. My favorite comfort shoe is Ecco. When we
travel we never take taxis and rarely use public transportation...we hoof
it, and my hooves just LOVE Ecco shoes!

Not quite Liz, but I wear La Plume which are made by the same company and same
style as the Mephisto, just the poor cousins. I couldn't think of the name La
Plume (you know menopause) when I first posted, but I could think of Mephisto
so that is what the fingers put.

I think that even for the Mephisto if you ever bought one pair, you would say
it is like the chair and worth the price. They last forever. They will repair
them or replace them for free. For me the short heel is the perfect typing
height. I have some that are 10 years old that I wear at least one or twice a
week.

Janice
Margie

2004-10-25, 7:09 pm

Before I went to Paris last spring, I tried every Mephisto style they
had. This was in a Mephisto store, not a department store or shoe
store that carried other brands, so I know I saw a very broad
selection of styles. They are all based on one of three foot bed
models. In each case, my toes were hanging over the lip, and I knew
that would cause problems. And, I even tried them again while in
Paris (where I had major shoe issues), and they didn't fit any better
there. And the prices weren't any better, either, BTW.

western ones that just look like ropers, with the little flat gilly thing on

Janice, I've only paid full price for my first pair of Ecco shoes. Since

Yep, Clark's are super too! I have two pairs, and both of them have a
removable footbed for your own orthotic if you want to substitute.

This is embarrassing, but I'm going to tell on myself anyway...I have
a pair of Born sandals that I wear around the house year-round. In
warm weather I don't change--I just go do errands in them. I've worn
them every single day of my life for the last seven years, and unless
I take them off, you'd never know they weren't bought this past
summer. The only wear is some fading of color of the footbed. Now
*that* is quality 'cause I'm hard on shoes! Because of my horrible
arthritis, my gait varies depending on which knee/vertebra hurts the
most.

But I digress...I checked on Ebay and discovered that they really have
a big selection. Between June and October I bought 9 different pairs,
mostly loafers. I have about $800 worth of these quality handsewn
shoes for less than $150. I feel downright smug!

If anyone is interested, you really have to do two searches on
Ebay--one for "Born sandals" and one for "Born shoes."

For me the short heel is the perfect typing
height. I have some that are 10 years old that I wear at least one or twice a
week.

I have three pairs of Ariat paddock boots. the English ones are great. The
western ones that just look like ropers, with the little flat gilly thing on
top, aren't comfortable to wear riding in an English saddle. I don' know why.

Pooh. I was right. $99 at Dillard's. Called "Melbourne" and they even have a
horse shoe on the bottom.

Great shoes! Bastad are good clogs, too. I never would have believed
that a wooden shoe could be comfortable until I tried them.

Further Liz,

Buy them out of this country on one of your trips and you will find them less
expensive, plus you have fabulous walking shoes while you are there.

I've tried them all. Iliked Rockports, but can't find any made in USA anymore.

So, now it is:
Ariat.

for in college. The shoes are worn out, but I did not encounter
enough winters to 'make it worthwhile' to get rid of the boots. They
fit still. $50 was a LOT back then I think I promised myself I would
never get rid of them. The Earth Shoes I had literally fell apart at
some point.

I've never heard of Born shoes. My favorite comfort shoe is Ecco. When we
travel we never take taxis and rarely use public transportation...we hoof
it, and my hooves just LOVE Ecco shoes!

If you liked them, you need to know they're available again. <G>
Google "earth shoes" or "Anne Kelso."
